Peninsula In Passage
Sydney Eberwine Tabor grew up in Richmond, on the water in a rural setting much like Bennett’s Creek. She married Vernon Eberwine III in 1980 and they moved into a house on Bennett’s Creek next door to her father-in-law, “Bumps” Eberwine. Vernon Eberwine spent most of his career in banking and was the president of the Bank of Isle of Wight and was also involved in real estate development. He died in 2009. Tabor remembers - Figuring out familial connections with all the cousins was challenging. When I was getting serious with Vernon he suggested I not talk about anybody – because everybody is related. Bennett’s Creek is littered with family members. Vernon always said about the family “We’re there when you need us but we’re not in your business.” People used to have ponies and livestock in their yards on the creek and the front fields here were all in spinach but Vernon never ate greens. When I first came here I felt like I was in the sticks. Then everything grew up around us but we’re isolated here on Eberwine Lane and the waterfront. I do hope the area gets developed with a plan – we will see what occurs. We are blessed to have this area.
