Peninsula In Passage
Eberwine Lane, off Bennett’s Pasture Road, harks back to the days when the Eberwine family was a major landowner in Nansemond County and a force within the agricultural community. According to Lucille Eberwine who, in 1991, documented some of the family history, Jacob Eberwine was born in 1827 in Wurttemberg, Germany, and came to America as a young man in 1852. With him came two brothers, Gottlieb and Fred, and their sister Barbara. A year later, Jacob’s sweetheart, Dorothea Maish, arrived. They were married a month later and settled in Camden, New Jersey, where Jacob worked at his wheelwright trade. In 1858 they moved to Virginia and settled in Churchland, in Norfolk County. They later moved to Bennett’s Creek.
