Life on the Copeland produce farm

Our kids grew up well rounded in nature. Sarah Bennett, the eldest Copeland daughter, remembers, we loved the outdoors and walking in the sand along the river. For fun we went to the beach or the outdoor movies. We didn’t have shorts but cut off our long pants. We had parties all the time and served cookies, cakes, blackberry cobbler, bread pudding and pies. Her sister, Phyllis Creamer, adds - Along the river front, which used to have much larger beaches than today, one could find large quantities of rocks that we expect could have been used as ballasts on the large boats that came to the piers to pick up produce. My parents used to gather the rocks to use in flowerbeds and such. I use the remnants of those rocks I could find at the farm to border my flowerbeds in Western Branch.
