At about the same time Suffolk opened the North Suffolk Public Safety Center, down US 17 from the rescue squad headquarters, and opened the doors to the rescue squad as well. In January 2004, the rescue squad and the Driver Volunteer Fire Department decided to merge, bringing ambulance service closer to the growing subdivisions around the Driver crossroads and helping to stabilize the rescue squad that had dwindled to less than a dozen active members, Five years later the Bennett’s Creek Ruritan Club disbanded. Founded in 1970 with the goal of

creating and supporting the rescue squad, the club held regular fundraising Bingo nights and pancake breakfasts for almost 40 years. When the City of Suffolk took over the squad’s support, the Ruritans served other causes. But with its declining membership aging, the club voted in January 2009 to fold and distribute its remaining funds to local charities.
