The boom also brought students to Nansemond River High, bringing the student population to 1800 students. Currently, with redistricting of some students to the new Kings Fork High, McLemore has about 1600 students. According to McLemore the student population now comes from new families in Harbour View and from those seven-generation families in Bennett’s Creek and Driver. I taught their parents, uncles, cousins – and sometimes that feels strange, really weird, Some of the teachers here - Sarah Smith, Christina Maupin and others – have been students here. The area has seen a lot of growth but still has a small town environment with Driver Days and Bennett’s Creek Park activities. It’s amazing to me that there is still so much vacant land, farms on both sides of road. We still see lots of deer and wild turkeys. This is a good community with a mixture of people who have moved in and those who have been here for years. We have lots of military families from the Joint Forces command and a lot of students who have gone all through the local schools together.
