Dr. Azar led then-UnityPoint’s fight against COVID from the start of the pandemic in 2020. As the hospital’s primary infection disease specialist, she worked nearly 24/7 during the pandemic’s early stages, developing treatment and prevention protocols, fielding calls from physicians struggling with a previously unknown affliction, and staying up to date on research and best practices regarding an ever-evolving disease.

“We would not have done as well as we did with the COVID pandemic if not for her leadership and guidance,” said her nominator. “Dr. Azar handled the added pressure with grace and confidence. Her expertise and calm demeanor helped her colleagues through a very difficult time, and for that, we are all grateful.”

Dr. Azar also co-chairs the hospital’s Antimicrobial Stewardship program. She is known for her advocacy on behalf of patients. Originally from Lebanon, she ranked at or near the top of her class in medical school. Advice to 20-year-old self: “Be more patient.” Hobbies: “Playing tennis, cooking, traveling and spending time with my family.” Best-kept secret: “I love to paint/draw.” Bucket list priority: “A road trip on the coast of Italy.” Best advice ever: “Trust in God and never give up!”
