2002, but today produces close to 15,000 cases of award-winning bottles — from Merlots to Cabernet Sauvignons — each year. In addition to luscious grapes for wine, Medford soil grows peaches and some of the country’s best pears, including Bosc, Bartlett and Comice varieties. These pears often fi nd their way into the baskets of one of the area’s biggest employers, Harry & David. The company, founded back in 1910, is famous for its gift baskets of fruit and candies, and is open to the public for factory tours, which include tastes of the scrumptious sweets. Other attractions include the Medford Carnegie Library, built in 1911 through a fi nancial gift from Andrew Carnegie; the 100-acre Bear Creek Park, which boasts multiple tennis courts, a BMX track, an amphitheater, a skate park and a dog park; and Roxy Ann Peak, a 30-million-year-old dormant volcano.
The home in later life of movie star Ginger Rogers, Medford, Oregon boasts a bustling art scene, including the Randall Theatre Company, the Rogue Opera and Craterian Theater at The Collier Center for the Performing Arts. The latter is a live performance venue named after one of the area’s largest benefactors, James Collier. The town also hosts the annual Southern Oregon Music Festival every October, which showcases big-name artists as well as young local musicians. For those who prefer the visual arts, Medford also o ff ers two art galleries, Art du Jour Gallery and Rogue Gallery & Art Center, both of which display works from local artists in various styles. No art critique is complete without a good glass of wine and, luckily, Medford is one of the hubs of Oregon’s growing wine industry.
