MILLION AIR
Take o ff
Welcome aboard, and welcome to the world of Million Air! For a business to succeed in today’s competitive and global environment, an executive must maximize each and every tool available. That includes managing with purpose during fi rst and last impressions with important clients and critical vendors, and in key relationships. An FBO is not merely a ‘gas station,’ but an address you are associated with upon every landing... whether the experience is positive or negative. An FBO not only services obvious needs for you and your fl ight department — such as rental cars pulled to your aircraft, shelter from the elements, catering and fuel for your departure — but the FBO is also a re fl ection on you, your fl ight department and your commitment to quality. Your FBO selection is a critical decision that could very well play to your strengths...or expose your competitors’ weaknesses. Imagine the thoughts going through a customer’s mind as they await your arrival in the lobby of the FBO. Are they being treated like a ‘ride,’ or are they being pampered by the service-centric ladies and gentlemen of Million Air? Are they simply waiting in a cold, impersonal terminal, or are they recognized as a VIP of your company in a plush lobby worthy of being your address at the airport? Sometimes even the best businesses in the world lose hard-earned goodwill due to placing the selection process on autopilot for key vendors, partners or strategic suppliers. If a business trip is worth traveling, then it must be worth Million Air! Million Air continues its unwavering pursuit of service excellence. I personally invite you to email me on how we can improve our focus, so that we may remain worthy of your continued loyalty. Whether for business or pleasure, we want your travels to be safe and memorable, and your arrivals tailored speci fi cally to you and your needs. Million Air is excited to announce more locations in our network, coming soon. Stay tuned for some big announcements. We see our task clearly — to establish the infrastructure and business strategies that increase business, decrease costs and manage not only our brand, but your experience, image and reputation as well! Everyone at Million Air looks forward to providing you with the service you expect and the opportunity to see you o ff on yet another journey to one of our fi ne FBOs.
Keep ’ em fl ying...

San Antonio River Walk
Best known for the Battle of the Alamo and its current NBA dynasty, the city of San Antonio also boasts a host of well-kept secrets for visitors. Pair these destinations with access to some of Texas’s most
beautiful countryside, and it’s no surprise that San Antonio is the most visited city in the Lone Star State. The Alamo is the perfect introduction to both San Antonio and the whole of the southwestern US. Located in the heart of Downtown San Antonio, the mission stands as a testament to the American fi ghting spirit; it’s fascinating for history bu ff s and o ff ers the more casual visitor an afternoon stroll in the surrounding gardens. But while The Alamo is by far the most famous of San Antonio’s historical landmarks, the city is home to fi ve other 18th-century missions, including Mission San José, which is the largest; these should not go overlooked. A day spent experiencing the more modern face of San Antonio is also a must. The unique River Walk, the most popular tourist attraction in Texas, o ff ers an unforgettable start. Winding along the San Antonio River, the 15-mile River Walk brims with chic boutiques, great food and some of the most atmospheric hotels in the Southwest, all shaded under a leafy canopy. Make sure to visit Hemisfair Park, home to the Tower of the Americas, or Market Square, teeming with authentic Mexican shopping stalls and Latino art. If you crave more fresh air, the gorgeous Texas Hill Country lies at San Antonio’s northern edge. Dotted with over 50 wineries, among them Grape Creek Vineyards in nearby Fredericksburg, this wide-open countryside o ff ers an ideal escape for both wine connoisseurs and nature lovers.

Designed by the award-winning local fi rm Diamond Schmitt Architects, the Centre boasts ideal sightlines and acoustics for ballet and opera performances, and follows in the tradition of world-renowned cultural institutions such as the Sydney Opera House. Opened in 2006, it was the fi rst theater in Canada built speci fi cally for opera and ballet performances, and is home to the Canadian Opera Company and the National Ballet of Canada, making it a must-see destination. Finally, because this is Canada, after all, a tour of the Hockey Hall of Fame is all but mandatory, as is an excursion to the world-class Royal Ontario Museum, which features artifacts spanning the whole of human history.
Perched on the northwestern shores of Lake Ontario, just under a two-hour drive from Niagara Falls, Toronto has long stood as a cosmopolitan ambassador for Canada. Outdoor adventures and, of course, hockey abound in the remarkably beautiful area. But today, Toronto, with its thriving art scene and diverse population, also assumes the mantle of a truly international metropolis. Once the tallest freestanding structure in the world, the CN Tower climbs above Toronto’s Entertainment District to a height of over 1,800 ft, a ff ording views of the Harbourfront Centre to the south and the city’s sprawling skyline to the north. Another great outdoor option, Links on the Bayou, o ff ers the best 18 holes in Central Louisiana. The Mike Young design weaves along Middle Bayou, providing golfers with beautiful scenery and an ample challenge.
Schedule a tee time, grab some insider tips from on- site PGA pro Trevor Lloyd and, when the scorecards have been signed, swing by the grill for a snack. While you’re in town, be sure to experience the various historical attractions that bring the region’s heritage to life. Spend an afternoon at the Alexandria Museum of Art, with its amazing array of local art, or take a tour of the Bentley Hotel, a haunnted turn-of- the-20th-century icon that occupies an entire block of Downtown Alexandria. For a glimpse of Deep South grandeur at its most re fi ned, take in the classical splendor of the Rapides Symphony Orchestra, currently conducted by maestro Joshua Zona, who has also performed with the St Petersburg (Russia) Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bacau.

Welcome
In travel, as with life, we rely on what we know versus what we don’t. We all have our favorite destinations, places we visit time and time again that bring a sense of comfort and nostalgia. But exploring far- fl ung locales (and learning a completely di ff erent way of life) is something that often has a profound e ff ect on us; one that lasts long after the

ALEX MARTIN Web editor
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some amazing adventures, from walking the Inca Trail in
vacation has ended. Spring is a time of new life, renewed optimism and hope (something that many of us are seeking now more than ever), and so our top adventures on p60 are more than just high-adrenaline, thrill-seeking endeavors — although there is plenty of that — but are instead about the life-enriching experience. As we have evolved our content to focus on responsible luxury, the travel operators that you know and trust have been doing so in tandem. The adventures you’ll fi nd on the pages are respectful to the local communities, the environment and, in some cases, the world at large. So you can rest assured that your hard-earned vacation has all the important stu ff covered, so you can focus on making memories. Memories feature elsewhere in this issue with a big step back in time. Miriam Cain looks at some of the most beautiful historic yachts on p80 and the storied (and in some cases, debaucherous) tales behind each vessel. Staying at sea, Becca Hensley compiles a selection of the only suites you need to book for your next cruise, including an all-new o ff ering from Disney. The nautical delights continue on p36 as Orla Pentelow looks to the ocean and its many dwellers as inspiration for this issue’s jewelry pages. Naturally, with any great adventure you’ll want to have a tangible memento and something to show the grandkids, like priceless photographs of your trip. Leica has a decidedly cult following — the German camera brand has been creating iconic models for over a century. Roberta Naas takes a closer look behind the scenes at how one of the beloved cameras is made. This issue closes with a whimsical dinner in the English woodland, where the only other guests are perhaps a curious rabbit or deer. Dine by candlelight, surrounded by nature, before enjoying your very own fi reworks display. Samantha Coles Editor samantha.coles@elitetraveler.com
Peru to exploring the world’s deepest caves in Vietnam, but my greatest adventure has played out at home. Becoming a father during a pandemic came with some unexpected challenges, but for every sleepless night and each leaky diaper, there are at least a dozen magical moments that make it all worthwhile.”
KIM AYLING Senior digital writer
“Adventure means something di ff erent to me: I’m never going to jump out of a plane. I think of adventure as
getting out of my comfort zone, which I did on a recent trip to Scotland. We booked two nights’ accommodation, but otherwise went in blind with a list of a few places to visit. We made our way around for 10 days, stopping whenever and wherever we pleased. We saw golden eagles, sea otters and minke whales, and we were completely relaxed. After a year being locked at home during Covid-19, this felt like the most exciting adventure imaginable.” “My greatest adventure in recent times is leaving London and moving to a haunted house in the middle of nowhere in rural England. The house was built in 1900 and is listed on The Paranormal Database, with the alleged haunting fi rst reported back in the 1940s… it certainly brings an edge to a creaky and remote old building!” THEA HALSTEAD Editorial director

Trimmed in diamond-stitch semi-aniline leather, they also feature world-class accommodations including a power-retractable ottoman and personal table. Additionally, the rear seat display, behind the front passenger seat, can fold down to allow for forward visibility, o ff ering an airy VIP seating experience with a maximum leg space of 43 inches. The rear seats feature Ultra Luxury-exclusive curved headrests, seatbacks, and cushions that gently wrap around the head, hips, and lower body. The all-new crafted VIP seating helps to o ff set any lateral g-forces and irregular road surfaces and help maintain a secure posture, while the use of soft urethane with superior vibration absorption performance helps to suppress unwanted movement— even in o ff -road driving conditions. Lexus had a thoughtfully conceived vision for its all-new 2022 Lexus LX 600, with expanded comfort and usability serving as the design’s foundation. Totally redesigned from the ground up, the all-new 2022 LX 600 stands as the ultimate sport-utility fl agship in the luxury brand’s growing and diversi fi ed model portfolio. The full-size luxury SUV, with its newly reengineered body-on-frame platform, avant-garde style, and all-new luxurious cabin, embodies Lexus’ commitment to meeting the evolving needs and lifestyles of customers. Having arrived at US dealers in early 2022, we’re looking forward to seeing these eye-catching vehicles grace our roads this year. Lexus is catering to the wide variety of customers’ needs with the expansion of LX’s range, which adds the fi rst-ever Ultra Luxury and F SPORT Handling grades. The Ultra Luxury o ff ers four independent seats for opulent travel comfort on all road surfaces. Customers preferring a sportier look and feel can select the F SPORT Handling grade with its unique touches and handling. With comfortable, spacious seating capacity, and a frankly stunning exterior presence on the road, the Lexus LX 600 is de fi nitely a vehicle we see perfect for luxury road-tripping this summer.

KEY IMPROVEMENTS Active Height Control (AHC) suspension On-road performance is unequivocally important, and Lexus delivers with some key technical improvements. Our favorite is the Active Height Control (AHC) suspension, which allows the ride height to be adjusted according to the driving environment, now coming with an expanded range of ride height positions. The system automatically adjusts vehicle height depending on the activation of Drive Mode Select or Multi-Terrain Select and the selection status of the transfer case. 19.3-inches of screen access The LX 600 features Lexus’ fi rst Lexus Interface dual display with a 12.3-inch upper screen and 7-inch lower screen designed to inform, not distract. The upper 12.3-inch display shows navigation, audio controls, and the Multi-Terrain Monitor during o ff -road driving. The lower 7-inch touch display shows the climate control screen and serves as a driving-support screen for Multi-Terrain Select. The space for wireless charging has been lowered to ensure visibility while seated in a reclined position. Cup holders are equipped with a lid and, with the lid closed, the resulting surface, which is coated with a scratch- resistant self-healing paint, can be used as a note table. The large console box houses ample storage space as well as the DC power supply, USB, and headphone jacks. F SPORT Handling Guests preferring a sportier look can opt for the F SPORT Handling grade with its unique design touches and handling. Styling features of the F SPORT Handling grade include new and exclusive 22-inch forged Dark Grey metallic fi nish wheels and spindle grille with jet-black chrome grille frame. Inside, the steering wheel and shifter feature textured genuine leather for improved style and grip, while the exclusive F SPORT emblem is applied throughout. A custom crafted F designed seat further enhances hold against lateral g-forces. Ultra White (exterior) with Circuit Red (interior) are o ff ered as an F SPORT Handling grade exclusive.
Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM) The Multi-Terrain Monitor uses four cameras to help the driver see around the vehicle. The images captured by the front, side, and rear cameras can be interchanged and are shown on the entire 12.3- inch display, allowing the driver to check road conditions often in the driver’s blind spots. By switching to the Lexus- fi rst, Back Under fl oor View, images of the foreground taken in advance are provided to the driver as transparent-under fl oor images. By superimposing the vehicle and wheel position over this image, the driver can check under fl oor conditions and front- wheel position. In another view, the vehicle is made transparent and an image showing the area around the rear wheels is magni fi ed, enabling the driver to ascertain conditions around the rear wheels and estimate distances to obstacles.

Antarctica FLORENCE KUYPER Expedition leader
As an expedition leader for Ponant, Florence Kuyper is no stranger to adventure. Originally from the Netherlands, she now spends most of her time discovering the extraordinary terrain of the polar regions. What does a typical day look like? Busy, she says. “It’s just one big 16-hour roller coaster: Organizing and adjusting the plan for the day, going out with my team to set up the activities, heading on outings with our guests, coming back on board, and starting organizing again.” But with a quick break looking out at the landscape, cappuccino in hand, and she’s able to recharge her batteries. ponant.com p50

Object of Desire by Serina Tatham AN EXPERIENCE TO SAVOR La Dame Jeanne is more than just a
cognac — it’s an experience. Hennessy has been crafting one-of-a-kind cognacs for over 250 years, so it makes sense that this new blend pays homage to its storied history. In tribute to his ancestors, master blender Renaud Fillioux de Gironde has created a unique, never-to-be-repeated blend of some of the most exquisite eaux-de-vie. In a first for Hennessy, this blend is encapsulated into two Dames Jeannes. A name given to glass vessels with a large body and small neck, Dame Jeanne translates to ‘Lady Jane’ and for centuries has been used as a container, traditionally covered in wicker, to store cognac. The blend is unfiltered to ensure the delicate yet complex eaux-de-vie is preserved. After aging in oak barrels, it is transferred to the glass vessel and locked inside the founder’s cellar, where it joins a perfectly preserved library of cognac ready to be blended. With notes of golden spices and candied orange zest, finished with aromas of fine cigars, this is a truly special offering. French master craftsmen collaborate from different fields — wicker, gilding, jewelry and leather — and combine their skills to craft the piece. Adorned using classic wicker from French willow interlaced with leather from the LVMH-owned Tanneries Roux in Romans-sur-Isère, it can be personalized to your liking: Choose from a variety of colors for the leather or opt for custom embossed lettering. Upon purchasing, guests will be invited to discover cognac through a tailor-made visit that includes the bottling ceremony and a bespoke tasting with the master blender himself. Hennessy will only be offering two Dames Jeannes for sale globally, and they will not be replicated.

by Alexandra Cheney Motoring At this moment, the Byzantine power struggle within automobile manufacturing between electrified engines and turbocharged motors cannot be denied. Singular brands like Mercedes-Benz and Porsche choose to produce both types of vehicles simultaneously, sorting out their respective futures while continuing to perfect their gas-powered precedents.
This year is deemed “the year of S” by several Mercedes-Benz executives, and a trio of debuts — S-Class, AMG EQS, SL — promise to redefine the Silver Star. The first to launch is the S 580 4MATIC Sedan, the globally beloved flagship that has been amped up to a 4.0L V8 biturbo outputting 496 hp. “The car simply gets better the more time you spend in it,” Dimitris Psillakis, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, told Elite Traveler . The etymology of the ‘S’ denotation dates back to 1903, when Wilhelm Maybach, chief designer at Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, developed the Mercedes Simplex 60 hp, a premium ‘touring saloon.’ The ‘S’ stands for Sonderklasse , or special class. Its popularity is undeniable. Mercedes has sold more than four million S-Class sedans worldwide. The current iteration is a beauteous enigma. At 17-ft long and a weighty 4,775 lbs, the S 580 4MATIC Sedan shouldn’t manage 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds. But it does. The acceleration and handling are light and responsive. The Burmester 4D Surround Sound system begs for a windows-down, volume-up drive, perhaps through California’s Los Padres National Forest. In the hills above Santa Barbara, the two resonators in each of the backrests convert bass tones into vibrations, resulting in driver bliss. (There’s also ear-level speakers integrated into the head restraints for a total of 30 speakers). There’s 64 shades of lighting, customizable scent, and cabin noise reduction if silence holds greater appeal. The Executive Rear Seat Package offers a more buttoned-up approach via two 11.6-inch touchscreens, infotainment system controls, and ventilated, heated, massaging, and reclining seats, as well as seat cushion airbags. The heated headrests function as both a flex and a bow for the brand. While some features are expected, like the second generation debut of Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), others are positively delightful: Rear-axle steering, which reduces the turning radius by up to 7 ft, 10 different massage programs and twice as many recyclate components as the preceding model. Electric feel Mercedes-AMGEQS
With the EQS, Daimler AG debuted the first of four Mercedes-EQ models (including a forthcoming SUV) that will share a completely new electric architecture. As the initial battery-electric AMG production model, the Mercedes-AMG EQS tends to a multitude of rulers. Sporting 751 hp and 752 lb-ft of torque via the optional dynamic plus package, it’s an “ambassador in the performance segment” according to Philipp Schiemer, CEO of Mercedes- AMG. It’ll smoke any naturally aspirated, supercharged, turbocharged anything off the line, as proven by this author at a set of particularly dubious red lights in Palm Springs. The two motors (one each at the front and rear axle) contain fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive. But being fast only goes so far. There’s a touch of sterility in the drive; something that, technologically speaking, is likely due to the approximately 350 sensors and cameras that monitor, watch and record road types, conditions, driver preferences and alertness. The EQS is not a vehicle but more of a “learning machine,” according to Benz. The quite literal centerpiece is the MBUX Hyperscreen — at 56-inches wide, the unit spreads from A-pillar to A-pillar across the front of the cabin. Three screens backed by eight CPU cores and 24 GB of RAM sit under a glass cover, appearing as one uninterrupted dash. Critics note that it sits a little tall when in the driver’s seat, but it is impressive nonetheless. Mercedes cheekily refers to the AMG EQS as “100% emotions, 0% emissions.” With a range of 300 miles, and fast DC charging with up to 200 kW (meaning 180-mile range recharged in 19 minutes), it’s worth noting that the brand is a central player in reducing range anxiety. 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS from $150,000, mbusa.com
Tremendous power PorscheTaycanGTS Sport Turismo
snow or on the track, thanks to its all-wheel drive, the balance of power is typically pushed to the rear wheels. Not overpowering or terribly torque heavy, as is often the case with electric engines, the GTS proves to be more drive style than naming convention. More aggressive bumpers and side skirts come standard, as does a gloss black trim. The extended roofline, complete with a transparent roof, transfers seamlessly into the rear fender haunches. A proper wealth of touchscreens greet driver and passengers, including standard upper and lower central touchscreens and the curved-screen instrument display. However, quite smartly, the brand retains some hard switches and controls in an effort to allow owners to retain the familiarity of former, perhaps non-electric Porsches in the midst of a larger transition. Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo from $133,300, porsche.com
As the first electric GTS, Taycan GTS Sport Turismo provides a total power output of 590 hp courtesy of two permanent-magnet electric motors, a 93.4 kWh Performance Battery Plus and its 800-volt architecture. According to Porsche, Taycan can fast-charge (when a DC charger can be found) at speeds up to 270 kW, going from 5% to 80% in 22.5 minutes, all the while maintaining a 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Translation: With each electric iteration, gas- alternative vehicles are becoming easier to own, less difficult to figure out, and more fun to drive. Make no mistake, the numbers speak for the popularity of this shooting brake; 28,640 Taycan’s were sold from January to September 2021, outpacing sales of the 911, the Panamera, 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman. Where the Taycan GTS Sport Turismo thrives, however, is in its adaptability. Equally at home in the
Still racing Porsche Panamera PlatinumEdition ride heights and levels of firmness.
From 1950 to 1954, the Carrera Panamericana was held in Mexico, challenging participating vehicles for more than 1,800 miles over the course of seven days. While speed mattered, it was endurance and reliability that ultimately won. The Panamera, now in its second generation, derives its moniker from not only the race itself, but the sentiment that rides shotgun. Since its launch in 2010, the four-door luxury station wagon has become a kind of hatchback for consumers. No fewer than 24 model variants now grace the Panamera lineup, with a selection of conventional options plus plug-in-hybrid powertrains. New for 2022, the Platinum 4 E-Hybrid Platinum Edition features a twin-turbocharged V6 and 455 hp. One of three new models, this edition spotlights the brand’s adaptive air suspension — more specifically, the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which allows the driver to select different
The result is a spectrum of possibility when it comes to ride comfort and handling. Entirely at home leaning into and pulling out of the curves of Sunset Boulevard — where one or two other Panameras may have been passed — the Platinum Edition held gazes thanks to its mélange of interspersed satin and gloss finishes. Although the brand is firmly steeped in electrification, it’s worth noting that the Panamera cements Porsche into a once controversial (albeit aging) segment. While some consumers are laser- focused on future products, there’s a robust market for others that remain curious but cautious. The Panamera is there to greet them, with 21-inch design sport wheels, black sport tailpipes, door sill guards in brushed aluminum and 14-way comfort seats.
