Welcome
@ELITETRAVELER AROUND THEWORLD The Elite Traveler team has been enjoying staycations and further-flung destinations, as well as looking behind-the-scenes at the creation of autombiles and yachts. For daily updates, follow us on Twitter @elite_ traveler and on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest @elitetraveler
This time last year, our Fall issue’s welcome letter began with the fatefully optimistic words: “As the world begins to ease out of lockdown…” Who’d have thought we’d be in a similar position some 12 months later. Oh, to have a precedented time again! While we’ve been aching for life to return to ‘normal,’ it is now clear that there is no such thing. But, to quote Morticia
Addams, what is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly... This summer, I stepped onto an airplane for the first time in two years — something that used to be a monthly (give or take) occurrence that I certainly took for granted. Although visiting Sir Richard Branson’s serene private abode, Necker Island (now reopened with a number of sustainable updates after hurricanes and fires nearly leveled it; see pg 132), was worth every single Covid-19 test. It is normal to feel overwhelmed (as I did) now that travel, and indeed the world as we know it, has changed so much. If you are one of the many who still feels apprehensive about long-distance travel, look closer to home and cruise the open roads. Alexandra Cheney takes a Bentley Continental GT on winding roads through Arizona on pg 128, admiring the beautiful red-rock landscape and taking dips in natural pools along the way. Prefer the cold? Becca Hensley heads to glamorous Aspen on pg 124 to see all the wonderful things you can do on and off the slopes. Our resident timepiece editor and human horological encyclopedia, Roberta Naas, has once again compiled our Top Watches feature. Now in its fifth year, the extremely selective list has a brand new criteria based on what you — our readers — want to see on the pages. A new minimum price of $20,000 and only those released in the last year have made the cut. This magnificent curation looks at the skilled craftsmanship and meticulous, painstaking attention to detail that goes into every single piece. Elsewhere in this issue, Doug Gollan checks out the latest model from Cirrus, Luke Abrahams takes us on a style journey to Positano, Italy, and Sophie Killip speaks to renowned interior designer Stephen Sills. We round off our Fall issue with an absurdly romantic dinner in the middle of the ocean, just off Turtle Island in Fiji. Samantha Coles Editor samantha.coles@elitetraveler.com
Samantha Coles makes some new friends on Necker Island. The curious lemurs can often be found scurrying around the private island’s tennis courts.
Kim Ayling soaks up the dreamy nautical views at The Idle Rocks, Cornwall. The boutique hotel is in the traditional (and charming) fishing village of St Mawes.
Sophie Killip makes the most of the end of summer at The Goring, London with some succulent lobster and champagne. We’ll drink to that.
Alex Martin has the yacht of his dreams created by superyacht design studio Harrison Eidsgaard. Her name? Alba, after his baby daughter.
What better way to check out a new hotel than with a bubble bath and a glass of wine? Samantha Coles visits Mayfair’s latest opening, The Biltmore.
Kim Ayling visits the Bentley factory in Cheshire, England to witness the unveiling of the latest model, the Flying Spur Hybrid Odyssean Edition.

MILLION AIR
Take off Welcome aboard, and welcome to the world of Million Air! On average, we spend 40 hours a week working — that is 1,840 hours a year, or 86,840 hours in our working life. No wonder it is the source of so much burnout! With work being such a big part of our lives, we owe it to ourselves to take pleasure and delight in our jobs. Some people think of the word ‘fun’ in the workplace as an oxymoron, or even as dangerous, especially in an industry like aviation where safety is so important. However, studies have shown that people who are in good spirits are more mentally alert and engaged, and have reduced stress and higher job satisfaction. Their mental attitude produces increased oxygen, endorphins and blood flow to the brain, which enables them to think more clearly and creatively. They are more relaxed, more accepting of others, and more likely to share their sense of humor. There are lots of machines and equipment in an office or on a ramp, but employees are not machines. As humans, we are social creatures who need a little pleasure to survive daily stressors. Have you observed that some of your best ideas come when you move on to something more fun and exciting? At Million Air, our employees are our most important asset, and creating an engaging culture where people love to come to work is my life’s mission. Creativity, intuition and flexibility are key to our successful operation. We aim for a stimulating environment, where employees enjoy their time at work and derive excitement from their efforts. We see not only internal but external benefits from a happy work environment. Attracting customers is easier in an environment of hospitality. A fun workplace is not only more productive and helps retain talent, but it invites people and profits. Million Air continues its unwavering pursuit of Service Excellence. I personally invite you to email me on how we can improve our focus, so that we may remain worthy of your continued loyalty. Whether for business or pleasure, we want your travels to be safe and memorable, and your arrivals tailored specifically to you and your needs.
Keep ’em flying...!

MILLION AIR FLIGHT BRIEFING ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, USA
Mighty Mississippi LONG KNOWN AS THE ‘GATEWAY TO THE WEST,’ ST. LOUIS OFFERS BOTH OLD-WORLD CHARM AND CONTEMPORARY LUXURY
WHERE TO SLEEP In the middle of St. Louis’s businesses, galleries and restaurants, The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis isn’t just surrounded by luxury, it is luxury. While having the largest dine-in wine cellar in St. Louis is impressive, it is the sumptuous Ritz-Carlton Suite that best encapsulates its namesake’s amenity-rich philosophy. With a Carrara marble bath and Waterford crystal chandeliers, this suite may well be the best on the Mississippi. 100 Carondelet Plaza +1 314 863 6300 ritzcarlton.com
Eero Saarinen's famed Gateway Arch
Perched on the banks of the majestic Mississippi River, St. Louis is a city as iconic as the land on which it sits. From all-American culture and a rich pre-Civil War history, to some of the best ultra-luxe options, any exploration of St. Louis should begin at the Old Courthouse. This stunning domed testament to US justice has been hearing cases for over 150 years. Home to the pivotal Dred Scott trial, in which former slave Dred Scott sued for his freedom and, according to some historians, hastened the onset of the American Civil War as a result, the Old Courthouse is a must-see for both history buffs and humanitarians. For a literal and figurative taste of a more modern US icon, take a guided tour of the world's largest Anheuser-Busch brewery, located mere footsteps from the bustling downtown district. In addition to three national historic landmarks on-site, you get the opportunity to peruse the chilled beechwood aging cellars, enjoy a photo op with some of Budweiser’s world-famous Clydesdale horses, and indulge in some complimentary brews in the post-tour hospitality room. After the tour, swing by Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals and one of the most revered ballparks in the country, for a tour, a game or maybe just a box of Cracker Jack. End your stay with a trip to St. Louis’s single most defining landmark, the Gateway Arch, 630 feet of Art Deco grandeur designed to pay tribute to the adventurous spirit of westbound pioneers. Intrepid travelers can take a tram ride to the top or embrace their inner Tom Sawyer with a sightseeing cruise aboard a replica 19th-century paddle-wheel boat. Either way, you will be entering the Midwest in style.
WHERE TO EAT Once the executive chef for TCS Expeditions’ private jet excursions, Carl McConnell is used to cooking for the on-the-go traveler. But when it came time to settle down, Carl and his wife Nancy opened the quaint Stone Soup Cottage just outside St. Louis. With only a handful of tables, the farm-to-fork partnership with nearby Wiese Nursery ensures Stone Soup’s flavors are big. In response to Covid-19, it is currently only doing deliveries, but will hopefully resume regular service soon.

The violet crown DANCE TO YOUR OWN TUNE AT THE LIVE MUSIC CAPITAL OF THE WORLD
WHERE TO SLEEP Right in the center of Austin, on the corner of Brazos and 6th streets, you’ll find The Driskill Hotel. It’s the perfect base for sightseeing in Austin. It has oodles of character and is full of historic charm; prosperous cattle baron Jesse Driskill built the hotel in 1886, and the hotel maintains many original fittings and interesting memorabilia. The hotel embodies the opulence and glamour of a bygone time, and The Driskill Grill is famed for its Texan cuisine — order the local wagyu beef. There are 189 guest rooms to choose from, each with its own individual character, but we love the two-bedroom Cattle Baron Suite best. WHERE TO EAT The Carillon draws visitors from far and wide and has many return diners — a testament to its delicious American fare with a Texan twist. Order the Texas corn soup with garlic aioli and roasted ‘street’ corn; the Silver Fern Farms ribeye with lobster-roasted potato taquito and ice spinach; and the vanilla cornmeal pound cake with blueberry basil mascarpone. For a special evening, book the private dining room. 1900 University Avenue +1 512 404 3655 thecarillonrestaurant.com WHERE TO FLY Million Air Austin responded to the high demand for top-quality corporate aircraft hangars in Austin, Texas with a limited offering of subleases. The FBO offers hangars dedicated to short-term leasing, overnight parking and maintenance facilities. Managed by Million Air and conveniently located at Austin Bergstrom International Airport and just eight minutes from Downtown Austin, Million Air Austin is Austin’s premiere hangar facility. Your jet awaits, yet you’re in no hurry to leave. That’s what Million Air Austin strives to offer — a facility so comfortable that it’s your home away from home. When the sun sets, head to Congress Avenue Bridge to see around 1.5m Mexican free-tailed bats soar through the sky from beneath the bridge. History buffs will find loads to see in Austin: Explore the Texas Capitol Complex at the Texas Capitol Visitors Center to learn about the state’s history with a guided tour. The University of Texas at Austin also has an impressive collection of museums including the Harry Ransom Center. Enjoy the great outdoors at Lady Bird Lake — do the 10-mile hike-and-bike trail; canoe, kayak or paddleboard through the calm water; or enjoy a beer and some lunch on a river cruise.
Texas’ state capital has something for everyone: eclectic live music focusing on country, blues and rock; lots of parks and lakes; a vibrant nightlife; excellent shopping; and delicious food. To begin your ultimate Austin music tour, head to Austin City Limits for a behind-the-scenes look at the Moody Theater. Austin Detours offers a fun tour led by an Austin musician who will take you off the beaten path to discover hidden-gem music venues. Animal lovers should head to the Austin Zoo. Situated southwest of the Barton Creek Habitat Preserve, it houses more than 300 animals and 100 different species. The mother road ONCE A FIXTURE OF THE WILDWEST, VICTORVILLE NOW PROVIDES A LITTLE PIECE OF HOLLYWOOD IN THE DESERT
WHERE TO SLEEP On the pine-rimmed shores of its namesake, the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa offers modern travelers the same escape Serrano Indians sought when they retreated to Big Bear Valley every summer. Whether you’re enjoying an indigenous, ingredient-focused treatment in the Spa of the Pines, or watching the whitecaps from the fireplace- adorned Presidential Suite, Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa captures nature at its most luxurious for your pleasure. 27984 California Highway 189 +1 909 336 1511 lakearrowheadresort.com
The route John Steinbeck dubbed “the mother road”
Lying just out of the Los Angeles smog, but close enough to retain some of LA’s glamorous culture, Victorville, California, is a city like no other, gracefully straddling desert expanses and high mountain lakes, Old West opulence and Beverly Hills bravado. Begin your trip to town with a stop at the California Route 66 Museum, located in the heart of Victorville’s Old Town. A tribute to the highway that once served as the gateway to the West and, for that matter, US folklore, the museum features a variety of Route 66 icons such as Hulaville and the Green Spot Motel’s neon sign, paying homage to what John Steinbeck once dubbed “the mother road.” Following on naturally from this highway heritage, Victorville has become a US motorsport capital, sitting

Whether you prefer a jaunt through the countryside or a thrilling whizz around the city, Louis Vuitton’s first-ever bicycle is up for the challenge. The result of two esteemed French brands joining forces, the bike is an embodiment of fine French craftsmanship. Each model is handcrafted and assembled at Maison Tamboite’s studio in Paris. Tamboite is a family-run, artisanal bike maker that has been creating
custom bicycles since 1912, favoring traditional methods of craftsmanship and bringing a boutique feel to buying a bike. The maison has no storefront; instead, clients are received in the brand’s showroom located next to the workshops in a secluded inner courtyard in Faubourg Saint-Antoine. No less than 15 personal measurements are required in the creation of a custom bike to ensure it is perfectly adapted to the owner’s unique riding style. Whether you’re buying a superyacht or searching for the ideal vessel for a charter vacation, it’s expected — and understandable — that much of your attention will be focused on the water. If you’re seeking a sanctuary for rest and relaxation, your focus need not go any further than that. If, however, you harbor an adventurous spirit and wish to journey down the off-beaten path, an expedition (or explorer) yacht with a land-roving vehicle is a must. When Perini Navi was commissioned to build the 164-ft explorer yacht, Exuma , more than a decade ago, special attention was paid to the yacht’s ability to sail through shallow, unchartered waters, as well as its minimal impact on the environment. The modern vessel — both in age and aesthetics — has earned the Rina Green Plus Award for the achievements of its eco-friendly design. Additionally, the yacht, which can comfortably accommodate 11 guests (with seven crew members), has sailed the world’s oceans since its launch and, thanks to an amphibious, off-road vehicle as part of its fleet of toys and tenders, the yacht has allowed its owner to even more extensively experience and explore the world’s less-inhabited regions. In fact, when Exuma was presented for sale by Fraser yachts in Monaco in September 2020, the owner addressed that specific amenity and the opportunities that it has presented. “I felt the need to have an explorer boat with an amphibious vehicle. This was absolutely essential,” he said. “Some people don’t realize how useful it is. We can use it in any country, including difficult places like Papua New Guinea. All these islands where there were no rental cars or taxis, we could just drop it into the water, climb the beach and tour the island.” Prospective world explorers who wish to sail — and drive — across remote areas of the world, just as Exuma ’s original owner has done, can do so by purchasing the 11-year-old vessel for €16.9 million (about $19.9 million). On the charter side, Ragnar , an expedition vessel available for weekly charters at €525,000 (about $623,000) by Burgess Yachts, delivers everything the intrepid, modern-day world explorer is seeking. Equipped to traverse arctic waters and boasting a range of 6,000 nautical miles, the 223-ft vessel, which was built in 2012 and refitted in 2020, can bring 12 guests (and 17 crew members) to the most far-flung regions of the world. It’s also equipped with an amphibious ATV, which allows guests to venture even farther afield. Not surprisingly, when the yacht emerged from Dutch shipyard Icon Yachts after a rebuild last summer, its captain immediately set the vessel on a course for Iceland. According to Chris Gregory, a London-based charter broker for Burgess Yachts, more vessels like Exuma and Ragnar are likely to offer similar amphibious and off-road tenders in the future. “The popularity of adventure charters is ever increasing, with more people wanting to go further afield,” he says. “With new destinations opening such as the Red Sea, we expect the need and want for such vehicles to increase. If you think about the Middle East with possibilities of dune bashing and desert safaris — an off-road vehicle would be a perfect addition to a yacht’s toy box.” fraseryachts.com; burgessyachts.com While many expedition yachts are sailing the world’s oceans, not all are created equal. As two leading vessels prove, the freedom of exploration requires a tender garage equipped with an amphibious, off-road vehicle.

Vision Jet G2+ The third edition of Cirrus Aircraft’s popular, very light jet was unveiled this summer
ONE VISION
There are basically three things you need to know about the third edition of Cirrus Aircraft’s popular very light jet. Unveiled this summer, the Vision Jet G2+ can take off frommore airports; it can do so with a higher takeoff weight; and, while its panoramic windows will entice you away from your digital devices, you can now stay connected with Gogo Business Aviation internet. An update of itsWilliams FJ33-5A engines means shorter runways for takeoff. That adds convenient airports in Santa Monica, California andWings Field outside Philadelphia. It also means there are no longer seasonal weight constraints when flying out of Aspen (see pg 124 for our guide to the swish town) or those hot days at Las Vegas Henderson Executive Airport. In fact, executives say to think of runways at 4,000 ft, and up to 500 lbs more payload for people, pets, baggage...whatever you need. The Vision Jet’s popularity with owners, pilots and passengers has always been due to its flexibility. There are multiple cabin configurations that can easily be switched out by the pilot on a flight-by-flight basis. Owners say the feature
makes it ideal for fishing and skiing trips on the weekend, then flying the corporate team to the week’s meetings on Monday. The single-pilot small jet can seat up to seven. And while owners and pilots are often one and the same, that’s changing as well. Cirrus’ VisionAir Owner management program offering includes an on-demand professional pilot, concierge service, complete maintenance coverage, aircraft management oversight and storage, as well as options for insurance coverage and referrals for professional tax advice. There are currently more than 245 Vision Jets in service. According to the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, it has been the most delivered private jet over the past three years. The G2+ is priced at $2.98m 'fully loaded.' That’s a bit more than the $2.85m price tag for the G2 and up from the original, which cost $1.96m. Of course, the Vision Jet is unique with both its emergency parachute, a feature that’s been used over 100 times, and Safe Return Emergency Autoland. The latter enables the aircraft to be landed by autopilot at the nearest suitable airport
with a touch of a button, located for easy use by passengers should the pilot become incapacitated. If you want to get a good look at the G2+, Cirrus has scheduled static displays this fall at airports inWestchester County (north of New York City); Nashville; Las Vegas; Sanford, North Carolina; and Scottsdale, Arizona. If you’re already an owner, there are opportunities for bothWiFi and engine upgrades, Cirrus executives tell Elite Traveler . The Vision Jet is likely to be more readily available on the charter market in the future. Florida-based Verijet is expanding its fleet nationally — and eventually to Europe. It offers a fixed rate of $3,000 per hour and an option to have a second pilot. Jet card broker OneFlight International includes the Vision Jet in its fixed-rate, guaranteed availability membership program. cirrusaircraft.com Doug Gollan is founder and editor-in-chief of the private aviation solutions buyer’s guide, privatejetcardcomparisons.com
