Fibrocystic breast disease (FBD). FBD is the name given to a condition where an individual experiences painful, lumpy breast tissue. The exact cause for this condition is still unclear though is believed to be related to hormones, as most women experience this discomfort prior to a menstrual cycle and the condition often ceases post menopause. MLD objectives: Promote drainage of the lymphatic vessels in the breast tissue and help to clear blocked tissue, and reduce pain and discomfort. MLD considerations: Weekly MLD treatments, possibly increasing frequency prior to menstrual period. NOTE: MLD of the breast tissue should only be performed when the therapist has been trained in the modality for working on the breast tissue and if full written consent has been received by the client. Proper communication, contraindications, session adaptations and draping should be carefully considered prior to each session. Neurological disorders. MLD is helpful and often used to assist a compromised nervous system, which is often seen in conditions like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and brain injuries. A 2014 study published in The Journal of Korean Society of Physical Therapy discusses the benefits of using MLD with patients experiencing psychological stress. Findings suggested that MLD was effective in reducing the activity of the sympathetic nervous system, resulting in a reduction in anxiety, pain and the increasing Pressure Pain Threshold. The study further discusses that MLD is a safe, noninvasive technique that is effective in inducing relaxation. MLD objectives: Depending on the symptoms the individual is experiencing, the main goal of MLD would be to reduce the activity of the sympathetic nervous system and activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which in turn could help reduce tremors, muscle spasms, reduce anxiety, manage pain and promote restful sleep.
MLD considerations: Focus massage on specific areas of discomfort as needed. Frequency of massage sessions will depend on whether the symptoms are chronic or acute. Sinus infections. When the cavities surrounding nasal passages become inflamed, an infection can occur, leading to symptoms such as headache, facial pain and nasal congestion. Sinus infections can be the result of consistent allergic rhinitis, or a cold or virus. MLD objectives: Use MLD to support localized immune function, reduce pain and remove congestion. MLD considerations: Daily MLD massage is generally recommended, if possible and only after acute stage has moved onto the chronic stage. Pregnancy edema. During pregnancy, there is an almost 50 percent increase of body fluids circulating through the body. The increase in hormone production means tissues are more relaxed and permeable. In combination, these two events create more edema within the tissues. Additionally, the growing fetus and its surrounding embryotic sac can press on the pelvic veins, leading to further disruption to normal fluid transportation. Pregnancy edema is usually experienced in the feet, ankles, legs, hands and face. A study by
