that often leads to edema, pain, muscle spasms and bruising. MLD objective: To decrease the edema, help remove some of the inflammatory substances from surrounding tissues that can lead to scar formation and fibrosis, and interfere with range of motion in the long-term. MLD considerations: In the acute phase, MLD can be applied proximal to the injury site, and treatments should be daily until a reduction in pain and edema is achieved. Whiplash is the name given to an injury when a sudden force to the neck region causes ligaments and tendons to overstretch and in some cases tear. Whiplash symptoms can include “heavy head” feeling, affected vision, edema in the neck, stain to surrounding ligaments and tendons. MLD objectives: Decrease edema and pain, and encourage normal range of motion and support overall healing.

MLD considerations: Apply MLD daily when possible and be cautious around pain and positioning. Concussion is a traumatic brain injury where the brain moves around vigorously inside the skull, resulting in a temporary loss of normal brain function. A full recovery from this trauma can take some time. MLD objectives: MLD can help calm the nervous system and reduce edema. MLD considerations: Daily treatments for 10 to 15 minutes applied within the pain tolerance of the client. Hematoma is when blood vessels become damaged or broken following tissue trauma and a collection of blood accumulates in the tissues. There are varying degrees of discomfort with hematomas, largely dependent on their location and surrounding structures.
