However, beyond just the physical realm, the chronic effects of TNS also extend to mental and emotional well-being, influencing conditions like depression, heightened anxiety, insomnia and diminished social functioning. 4 There is also some evidence for the increase in incidence and exacerbation of behavioral changes like attention deficit disorder symptoms. 5 The intricate interplay of technological advancements and our daily habits necessitates a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted challenges posed by TNS, along with an urgency around helping individuals to consider adopting

1. Neck pain . Muscle pain and tightness is an immediate consequence as the muscles supporting the head and spine attempt to reorient the head in space or work to stabilize the cervical spine if subluxations or overstretched ligaments are present (which can present in the case of past injuries such as sports injuries or whiplash). The muscle tightness and low-level spasms lead to a rapid onset of discomfort. 2. Headaches/migraines . These can occur in the short term due to muscle tightness and spasms, as well as eyestrain and weariness from prolonged device use. The immediate impact is felt as tension builds up in the muscles. 3. Thumb arthritis (or thenar tendinitis or tendinosis) . Joint swelling and pain can happen quickly from punching a computer keyboard, but even more so from holding the weight of mobile devices and tapping smaller keys on smartphones, notebooks and gaming devices. This is especially true for those predisposed to arthritic joints. 6 4. Hand pain . Generalized hand tension, pain and swelling can occur from simple overuse/ non-rest, repetitive motion and strain on the small, intrinsic hand muscles.
