Other functions The origin of pectoralis minor is the anterior aspect of ribs three, four and five. It inserts on to the medial aspect of the coracoid process of the scapula. The actions of pectoralis minor are to depress, abduct and downwardly rotate the scapulothoracic joint. When the scapula is fixed by other muscles, this muscle can help to elevate the ribs during forced inhalation. 28 Serratus Anterior The serratus anterior is a fairly large muscle located on the lateral aspect of the ribcage. Its origin is on the lateral surfaces of the first eight or nine ribs. This muscle runs deep to the scapula and subscapularis muscle to insert on the anterior aspect of the medial border of the scapula. When the serratus anterior contracts,

of this muscle include stabilizing the medial border of the scapula against the thorax and elevating the ribs during forced inhalation. 29 Pectoralis Major The pectoralis major is a very large, fan-shaped muscle located on the anterior chest. It is a powerful muscle involved in various movements of the glenohumeral joint. The clavicular division of this muscle originates on the medial half of the clavicle. Its sternal division begins on the manubrium and body of the sternum, and the costal division originates on the costal cartilage of the first six ribs. Some sources also include an abdominal division that starts on the aponeurosis of the external oblique muscle. The function of the pectoralis major muscle is flexion, medial rotation, adduction and horizontal adduction of the glenohumeral joint.
