service providers in the profession and the populations they serve. An empathy exercise sometimes used in massage school is a simulation activity: students artificially limit the use of a physical or sensory ability to mimic the experiences of people with impairments. Examples are wearing a blindfold to simulate blindness or wearing noise canceling headphones to simulate deafness. One advantage to this type of empathy training is that it invites students to think more deeply about the challenges that other people face. You might choose to do this kind of activity with your employees at your practice or with colleagues in your area.
However, impairment simulation activities take place within a finite window of time— offering only a brief experience of what it is like. These activities fail to tell a complete story or consider the lived experiences and accessibility barriers people with the impairment encounter daily. It is more meaningful to learn about the experiences of people by hearing directly from them. That means asking questions about how we can help improve the massage experience. This can be done before the massage or even while conducting a business assessment looking for ways to improve services. These next essential steps will go one-step further toward creating an inclusive practice and deepen empathy for our clients.
