A VIEW FROM THE WOODS

What My Grandfather Taught Me About IMTS

While I obviously have a bias here, my experience gives me a good understanding about what it takes for someone to go to IMTS. Some people argue that there is an array of alternatives to IMTS for a visitor, whether it is viewing and sourcing online or attending a smaller show, be it a regional expo or a vertical show dedicated to a particular technology. While there are plusses to things like that, the big lift that one gets at IMTS is access to tens of thousands of people as well as to an array of equipment. Not only is it possible to meet people deliberately (e.g., an appointment) but also coincidentally (i.e., you are in a booth asking about something while someone from some other company is there, interested in the same thing). What’s more, per my grandfather, seeingmuchmore than what you think you’re there to see (you might be thinking of a metal removal machine – but then see additive equipment that might provide an answer) allows you to come up with new ideas, new approaches, new alternatives. This is particularly germane today with the burgeoning digitalization of industry and the dynamic forces that are put upon all of us as a result of the near-shoring, on-shoring, and re-shoring efforts that are occurring to address supply chain weaknesses. For exhibitors, it is the ability to get in front of more people at one time in one place than is possible anywhere else in 2022 – people who haven’t had the opportunity to be at an IMTS since 2018. I know that many companies are evolving their positions, propositions, and products; IMTS gives them the platform to present that to a massive, engaged audience. Certainly, I will be at The Show this year. I hope you will, too. And while my grandfather is gone, I know that his approach is something that I and many others he encountered over the years will bring with us to Chicago.

Many of you might have an unforgettable memory of your grandfather taking you to a ballgame or fishing. And while this might seem as though I am making this up given what I do, one of my fondest memories of my grandfather is going to IMTS with him back in 1980. He ran a company in

upstate New York, and I was working an apprenticeship there. Having grown up around the machinery on his shop floor, it simply made sense to go to Chicago for what is often simply referred to as “The Show.” I’d never been to a trade show before then, and as I walked up and down the aisles with my grandfather, I was amazed at the extent of the equipment on display. But “walking up and down the aisles” sounds as though he was simply browsing, which was far from the case. At almost every booth he would stop and ask someone something about what they had on display – whether it was the equipment they were exhibiting or simply a fixture (that they were using, not selling) on the machine. He was always interested in gaining more information that he might be able to use to improve his operations. In addition to learning, he was also actively buying. He had a stack of P.O.s in his jacket pocket. When he’d leave an IMTS, he would have (1) an encyclopedic knowledge of developments inmanufacturing and (2) receipts for new equipment that would be shipped to his factory. My grandfather’s inquisitiveness stuck with me, so whenever I went to IMTS on my own, I would always look beyond whatever type of machine I was there to assess so that I could try to figure out ways to do things better. Over the years I have gone to IMTS as a visitor, as an exhibitor, and as an AMT official. But my perspective was set by my grandfather and his curiosity. One of the questions people sometimes ask me is whether a trade show like IMTS still has relevance for visitors or exhibitors. Seeing More

A Tribute to James S. Gleason Jim Gleason of Rochester, New York, transformed his great-grandfather’s gear-making company, Gleason Corp., into a leading global gear technology enterprise. Gleason began working at the company in 1959 and held various positions before ultimately becoming CEO in 1981 until 2002. During that time, he broadened the company’s product line and returned the company to private ownership from being a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange. From 1996 to 1997, he served as AMT chairman and was the recipient of the prestigious 2014 AMT Al Moore Leadership Award. Read on at AMTonline.org/article/Jim-Gleason Continuing To Push Digital Manufacturing Through Data Sources The newest installment in the Digital Transformation White Paper Series takes a deeper look into the many forms of data. Historically, we have depended on data collected directly from equipment on the shop floor. Today, we need to think about how and where we can access data and what other related information is needed to make effective decisions to support manufacturing operations. Manufacturing Matters Check in for the highlights, headlines, and hijinks that matter to manufacturing. These lean news items keep you updated on the latest developments.

TECHNOLOGY

Shifts to Green Manufacturing Technology adoption requires offering value to a user, and as consumers shift buying trends toward environmentally friendly products, the manufacturing ecosystem is following suit. In the case of green manufacturing, the values can be broken down into several categories: reduced energy consumption, renewable sources, sustainable materials, waste reduction, and extended part longevity. The key is taking a deeper dive into the validation of these categories for a specific technology. Some of the technologies labeled as “green” do not fit in the circular economy or in the larger life-cycle analysis. Until these technologies are more mature, don’t forget to hype-check. Is it really conservation? Is it really green?

INTELLIGENCE

Historical IMTS Effects on September USMTO Results Manufacturing technology orders always appear to surge in September of even-numbered years. You may have guessed that this has something to do with the occurrence of IMTS. In fact, over the last 11 shows, between 1998 and 2018, the average September “show year” order totals reported by USMTO equaled just over $490 million – 40% higher than the average $348 million reported across all other months throughout the year. To erase any doubt that our observation is caused by chance, our analytics team accounted for the variability in the biannual September surge observations. Doing this ensures there aren’t any large September outliers that would inaccurately overweight the computed average. It turns out, the order totals placed in September of a show year do not happen by chance and can be attributed to the order activity at IMTS. MANUFACTURING MATTERS

INTERNATIONAL

IMTS Is Truly International The first word in IMTS is “international,” and historically, with registered visitors from more than 100 countries, it is an event for the worldwide manufacturing technology community. The designated international area is in the North Building, Level 2. Here you’ll find AMT’s Global Services office (N228), AMT’s international staff, and the International Lounge (N226) for informal meetings and breaks to refresh and rehydrate. Nearby is the U.N. of manufacturing technology: the International Association area. Visitors can research adding a new foreign product to their lineups or speak to foreign association delegates from 20 countries. On Wednesday, we will hold an AMT members-only International Breakfast, where AMT’s global team will share business intelligence from their foreign regions. This year we will also debut LATAM Night, a networking event focused on the international Spanish-speaking community. New Program Supports AM Adoption Over the past 18 months, the Biden administration announced several efforts to strengthen domestic supply chains. Additive Manufacturing (AM) Forward is a new public-private program that aims to build more resilient supply chains by increasing 3D printing technology adoption by small and medium-sized manufacturers. Several large companies, including GE, Raytheon, Siemens Energy, Lockheed Martin, and Honeywell, have already signed up. They made public commitments to their smaller, domestic suppliers to purchase AM-manufactured parts, train employees, provide technical assistance, and create standards and certifications for AM technologies and products. Any OEM can participate in AM Forward by publicly supporting the adoption of additive manufacturing with detailed commitments. The AM Forward framework could be used to increase the adoption of other advanced manufacturing technologies with the successful negotiation of the COMPETES/USICA innovation bills. IMTS 2022: History in the Making Why being in Chicago between Sept. 12 and 17 continues the tradition of technical development and deployment. On May 1, 1893, the World’s Columbian Exposition opened in Chicago. It was an international event with the participation of 46 countries. (Oddly, the event was meant to mark the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America; it was a year off). There were more than 65,000 exhibits containing more than 50,000 objects (which are now in The Field Museum). The exposition was spread out on 630 acres. It ran until Oct. 31. Therewere a few interesting things on display. Like the Ferriswheel. It was invented by G.W.G. Ferris, a Pittsburgh-based engineer. The Ferris wheel at the World’s Columbian Exposition was 264 feet, taller than the one you can ride today at the Chicago Navy Pier, and each of its 36 cars could hold 60 people each – clearly a considerable feat of engineering and manufacturing. More notably, there was electricity. In 1893 it was a novelty to many people in the country. So, the exposition was wired: U.S. President Grover Cleveland pushed a button, and that kicked off the generation of electricity for thousands of lightbulbs across the exposition as well as for electrical appliances shown in some of the exhibits. The electricity was AC. George Westinghouse had won the bid for the fair, beating Thomas Edison and his DC technology. In the Hall of Machinery there were 12 1,000-horsepower generators. Westinghouse had worked with Nikola Tesla on developing the polyphase system of AC power generation and transmission. It is argued that the demonstration of AC power to the more than 25 million attendees established it rather than DC, much to Edison’s chagrin. It could be argued that the 264-foot Ferris wheel proved the mechanical ingenuity of engineers, and the use of electricity showed the transformative power of technology. Then and Now Which brings us to IMTS 2022. Just as the timing of the World’s Columbian Exposition was off (but what’s one year in 400?), this analogy might be imperfect. The purpose of the first IMTS, formally the National Machine Tool Builders’ Exposition, held in 1927, was to serve as a science fair, as the machines were not for sale. IMTS 2022 will run from Sept. 12 to 17 – six days, not six months. There will be more than 2,000 exhibitors, not some 65,000. By contemporary trade show standards, IMTS 2022 has a massive footprint: It will take place in the entire McCormick Place complex with some 1.3 million square feet of space taken up. And while there were some 25 million people at the 19th-century expo and there were but 129,000 people at IMTS 2018 – an IMTS record – it needs to be kept in mind that while the World’s Columbian Exposition was meant to draw in anyone and everyone, IMTS 2022 is focused on those people who are currently involved in manufacturing technology (or who will be in the not-too-distant future – as in students). Both events include international exhibitors and attendees. But this comparison with the World’s Columbian Exposition is not simply predicated on the city of Chicago.

The Purpose Rather, the point of the 19th century expo was predicated on the concept of showing advances in technology that would be of use to broad portions of the population. A point of IMTS 2022 is to show attendees advances in manufacturing technology that are similarly germane to broad portions of durable-goods producers: To show the democratization of manufacturing technology. Over the past several years, there have been advances in tooling, machinery, automation, and systems that were once largely in the purview of big manufacturers, such as those in automotive and aerospace. This equipment was both comparatively complicated and expensive, such that it took the resources of large companies to productively deploy it. But just as has been the case in other types of technology, there has been a decided drive on behalf of the providers to make this far more accessible to people. Tech Advances Think of computer tech. In 2003 the first 64-bit processor for personal computers was released, the Athlon 64 from AMD. While that was special, it is now expected by anyone who is buying a PC to browse the web – which really wasn’t a consumer consideration until Netscape released its browser in 1994. Google bought Android in 2005. Apple launched the iPhone in 2007. Which of those things don’t affect you right now? That technology has gone from only being for specialists to essentially everyone.

Again, while the analogy isn’t exact, and as the “everyone” in this case would be manufacturing professionals, it is clear that the same sorts of changes have been occurring in production technology.

to encounter like-minded people. This is an opportunity that should not be overlooked or underestimated. One of the most important aspects of IMTS 2022 – and this would be the case even had we all not been comparatively isolated from others due to the pandemic for the past couple years – is that visitors not only come to see the new technologies on display but to meet with people from different companies, different countries, and to exchange ideas and experiences. The Pavilions Abrasive Machining/Sawing/Finishing North Building, Level 3 Abrasive machining can remove cubic inches of material while precision grinding provides surfaces measured in Ra. Among the equipment here: Grinders (cylindrical, internal, angular wheelside, creep-feed, through-feed, centerless, surface, abrasive belt, jig, tool and cutter, universal, cam); bench, crankshaft and abrasive cutoff machines; saws (band, cold); lapping machines; balancing machines; honing machines; polishing machines. According to the ISO/ASTM 52900 standard, “Additive manufacturing is the general term for those technologies that, based on a geometrical representation, create physical objects by successive addition of material.” Said more simply, this is a technology that allows you to do things ranging from making things that couldn’t otherwise be made for reasons ranging from complexity to types of materials to creating parts or tools in a matter of days that might otherwise require weeks. Types of additive to be shown: Vat photopolymerization; power-fed fusion; binder jetting; material jetting; sheet lamination; material extrusion; directed energy deposition. Additive Manufacturing West Building, Level 3

Democratization A number of technologies have contributed to the democratization of manufacturing technology. They include: • Networking and communications technologies (thanks, in part, to MTConnect) are now readily available to one person shops, allowing them to link to other similarly sized operations to create a virtual manufacturing operation, even though the facilities are thousands of miles apart. • Robots have gone from being large devices for spotwelding, diecasting, and painting in auto assembly plants to not only small, easy-to-use 6-axis or SCARA devices but to collaborative robots that can be implemented to work alongside people in production facilities of all sizes. • Digital tools – not only for designing components and running machines – have become nearly ubiquitous: A Google search of “CAD for iPad” returns over 57 million results. And digital twins have gone from being something used by NASA in 2010 to usable tools for a wide array of operations. • Additive manufacturing is now something that is as readily available as multispindle machine tools – and both were comparatively expensive to acquire and difficult to use not that long ago. Again, all of this goes to the point of the democratization of manufacturing technologies. Places To Go, People To See Because of the extent of the floorplan at the McCormick Place complex, there is the separation into nine different pavilions, each of which is dedicated to a discrete number of technologies. But there is an aspect to the pavilions that shouldn’t be overlooked: Historically, pavilions have been meeting places. So, those who visit any of the IMTS 2022 pavilions are likely

don’t operate smoothly (if at all). And as for the cleaning and environmental aspects: Not only are there regulatory and health and safety issues, but large manufacturers are also requiring suppliers to be in environmental compliance, to say nothing of social awareness. Yes, this matters. A lot. Included: Filtration, purification, separation, electrical, noise control equipment; washers and cleaners; ballscrews, bearings, spindles, motors; conveyors and AGVs; assembly, motion control, and test equipment; software. Yes, subtractive manufacturing. Still the means by which most durable goods manufacturing is performed. But now with greater levels of capability, precision, and networking capability. To borrow the old Oldsmobile line: “Not your father’s machine tools.” Among the machines, centers, and systems: Machining and turning centers; boring, drilling, transfer, screw, milling, turning, EDM machines; automated manufacturing and assembly systems. Metal Removal South Building, Level 3

Controls and CAD-CAM East Building, Level 2 & Level 3

Everyone knows about the First Industrial Revolution. Who didn’t learn about James Watt and Eli Whitney in elementary school? But what of the Second Industrial Revolution? This overlooked stage in technical development is arguably analogous to the Fourth Industrial Revolution

(aka Industry 4.0) that we are in today. Then – in the late 19th and early 20th centuries – networks were created with the telegraph (digital) and trains (physical). Electricity allowed the powering of machinery for more efficient factories. And so, today there is the networking of digital information among machines and entire enterprises. Digital technologies or Industry 4.0 at IMTS 2022: CIM/CAD/ CAM systems; CNC controls; automation management systems; communications systems and LAN; software development systems services; computers and software; instruments controls and systems integrations services. Although there are advances such as various types of composites and other polymer-based materials, by and large the greatest proportion of durable goods are produced with metals, oftentimes requiring forming (whether it is a fender for a car or a door for a fridge). Associated are processes from cutting to cleaning, with the first requiring increasingly high levels of precision to reduce waste and the latter being done in ways that are not environmentally deleterious. Among the equipment here: Plasma machines; coiling, bending, and forming machines; shears; press brakes; stamping presses; roll formers; heat-treating equipment; lasers; waterjets; marking machines; punching equipment. Fabricating & Lasers North Building, Level 3 Remember the quote from Archimedes, “Give me a lever and a place to stand and I will move the earth”? Well, it so happens that when you have two gears, you have a lever. So, arguably gears and the means to make them have been undergoing improvement since circa 250 BCE. They are still leveraging power in things ranging from precision medical devices to wind turbines. This pavilion includes: Gear hobbers, shapers, cutters, grinders, shavers; broaching equipment; measuring machines. Gear Generation North Building, Level 3

Quality Assurance East Building, Level 3

“If you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it.” – Lord Kelvin “If you can’t measure it, you can’t change it.” – Peter Drucker “One accurate measurement is worth a thousand expert

opinions.” – Grace Hopper Smart people, one and all.

This pavilion includes: Various measuring machines (coordinate, laser, vision); gaging systems (stand-alone, in process); and software.

Tooling & Workholding Systems West Building, Level 3

No cutting is going to occur without a tool. No accurate cutting (or forming or measuring or …) is going to occur without fixturing. Which goes to the point that no matter how sophisticated, complex, or networked your operation, without these things, it simply won’t work as planned. At IMTS 2022: Cutting tools; tool holders; work holders; jigs and fixtures; coolants and fluids. See You in Chicago for IMTS 2022! The World’s Columbian Exposition was transformative as the 19th century segued into the 20th. And arguably, IMTS 2022, showcasing advances in machinery, software, automation, peripherals and more, will provide transformative capabilities to those manufacturers who embrace the tech as they help build the future.

5 Reasons IMTS 2022 Is a Can’t-Miss Event BY DAVID BURNS

PRINCIPAL AND FOUNDER, GLOBAL BUSINESS ADVISORY SERVICES AND SENIOR ADVISOR, AMT

How often do you look at your phone and get a message that says that there is something that you shouldn’t miss – and all it takes is a click on the

5. Excitement – We all know that experiencing Chicago extends beyond the show day. If you wander into the Redhead Piano Bar

screen to get there? I am not a huge user of my phone, or social media, but it sure seems as if I receive a dozen “can’t-miss” messages a day. That thought occurred to me because now I want to tell you about a definitive “can’t-miss event” – IMTS 2022, which will be held Sept. 12-17, at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois. I went to my first IMTS in 1986, and I have attended every IMTS since. (We all get a mulligan for 2020.) I don’t have the longest attendance streak out there, but the point is that I have been to IMTS a bunch of times. For me, IMTS falls into the “can’t-miss” category, and I have been thinking about why IMTS 2022 is, to me, so very important. Five reasons ring true: 1. Community – When I think of IMTS, the word “community” is the first thing that pops into my head. For the most part, advanced manufacturing is a complicated, difficult endeavor. At times, it can feel isolating to try to simultaneously solve problems and be commercially viable. IMTS is a place where, for one week, a global community that faces those same challenges gathers. 2. In-Depth – The preponderance of information available to all of us online is impressive and very useful. But nothing beats the opportunity to engage someone about their technology or their product and to drill down – and drill down until you feel you have the whole story. Personal interaction at a trade show allows you to do that. 3. Immersion – Many of us love manufacturing. It is in our blood. IMTS is one place where no matter who you talk to or what you see, it touches the manufacturing world. And it is a bit awe-inspiring to wander down to the Student Summit and see thousands of young people just beginning their lifelong connection to manufacturing. 4. Surprises – Wandering the aisles at IMTS is filled with anticipation. Like most folks, I have meetings and appointments when I am in Chicago. But an “aisle wander” is infused with a level of excitement. Right around the next corner could be something new or something I have never seen before. People around the world are working to solve a myriad of manufacturing problems – and many of those novel solutions are on display in Chicago.

or Kitty O’Sheas, expect to see old friends and to meet new people who, like you, love manufacturing.

So, as you can tell, I am an unabashed fan of IMTS. I will be in Chicago the week of Sept. 12, and I will soak in all that the IMTS experience has to offer. And I confess: I wrote this article because someone asked me, “Why do you attend IMTS 2022?” My simple answer is: If manufacturing technology is an interest, why would you not attend IMTS 2022?

MCCORMICK PLACE ENHANCEMENTS

The Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) has made considerable upgrades to ensure McCormick Place is safer, brighter, and more welcoming to the public. Improvements include: • Received GBAC STAR Facility Accreditation led by the Global Biorisk Advisory Council, which determines a facility’s compliance for a comprehensive system of cleaning, disinfection, and disease prevention to create practices, protocols, procedures, and systems to control risk. • Increased number of touch-free, automatic doors. • New signage and processes for entering and exiting. • Increased frequency of filter replacement to ensure the highest possible air quality: Building engineers are complying with ASHRAE standards. • Increased rate of cleaning for high-touch areas: Cleaning and disinfectant approved by the EPA in public areas, including ozone or hydroxyl generators, electrostatic mist cleaning, and foggers. • Installed hand sanitizer stations. • Trained employees, including security, fire safety, EMT, and paramedical personnel to recognize possible symptoms. In addition to the above, McCormick Place has improved all lighting and control systems. They have converted 65,000 lights to LED, increased light levels at exterior loading docks, and installed sensors to reduce light levels in unoccupied spaces. They painted the show floors, added additional fireproofing, made concrete repairs to the south dock, and installed better lighting in Donnelly Drive to reduce dark shadows, improve pedestrian and vehicle access, and create a more welcome environment.
