Voice Lab1 Voice Lab 1 offers group instruction designed for students interested in developing their solo singing abilities in a supportive class environment. The class focuses on fundamental vocal technique, healthy singing habits and basic musicianship skills necessary for solo and ensemble performance. The curriculum addresses the physiological aspects of singing and applies these principles to various musical styles. MUSIC-190 Credits:1 Choir 1 Choir 1 is a performance-based, beginning level course designed for students with little or no prior choral or formal music experience. The primary goal is to foster an enjoyment and appreciation of music through ensemble singing while developing fundamental vocal and music literacy skills. Choir 1 is open to all MATC students and especially to anyone who would enjoy choral singing. MUSIC-191 Credits:3 Performance Techniques 1 Performance Techniques 1 is designed for highly motivated music majors and advanced students who have achieved technical and musical pro fi ciency on their primary instrument or voice. It functions as a studio class or workshop rehearsal where students receive intensive coaching and feedback on a variety of challenging solo and ensemble repertoire. The class focuses on re fi ning artistic interpretation, enhancing stage presence, developing advanced technical mastery, and fostering critical analytical skills through peer review and instructor guidance. Prerequisite(s): Complete MUSIC-163. MUSIC-192 Credits:3 Performance Techniques 2 This class is the capstone course in the performance sequence, designed for highly accomplished music students preparing for public performance, auditions or professional careers. Building upon the skills developed in MUSIC-191, this class focuses on re fi ning artistry to a professional level, specializing in program curation, developing lead sheets and charts, and creating arrangements. Students will engage in positive peer review and receive intensive supportive coaching from the instructor as they polish works in a variety of genres for performance. Students in this ensemble are expected to exhibit a high degree of musical independence, leadership and interpretive maturity. Prerequisite(s): Complete MUSIC-191.
Honors Ensemble The Honors Ensemble offers a selective, high-level musical experience designed for the most accomplished instrumentalists and vocalists. With guidance from the instructor, this ensemble is dedicated to choosing repertoire, arranging materials, and the study, rehearsal, and public performance of challenging, diverse genres. Members are selected through an audition process or are appointed by faculty and are expected to perform at a high level, demonstrating technical pro fi ciency, musicianship and collaborative skills. The curriculum emphasizes intensive rehearsal techniques, sophisticated artistic interpretation and a deep engagement with historical context and performance practice. Prerequisite(s): Complete MUSIC-192. MUSIC-205 Credits:3 Music Appreciation Music Appreciation is an introductory, nonperformance-based survey course designed for students with little or no formal musical training. The course aims to enhance listening skills and cultivate an informed understanding and enjoyment of music through exploration of Western classical music traditions, with some exposure to global and popular music genres. Students will be introduced to musical elements such as melody, harmony, rhythm, texture and form in order to develop the vocabulary and critical tools necessary to describe, analyze and evaluate musical works. MUSIC-206 Credits:3 History of Rock Music This course provides students with a survey of popular American music of the 20th century, tracing the development, evolution and maturation of musical styles, techniques and compositions. Development of analytical listening skills is a course focus. MUSIC-207 Credits:3 Jazz History This course will focus principally on America’s indigenous music — jazz. Course will explore the development of this music over the last 150+ years to present. Course will explore musical, multicultural and historic perspectives, tracing the evolution of the music. Selective listening, as well as analysis of rhythmic, melodic, harmonic and form structures, will be a course focus. Open elective to all majors. MUSIC-210 Credits:3 World Music Sound and Structure This course is a survey of several major music traditions/genres around the world and an introduction to the fi eld of ethnomusicology. Students will focus on music analysis (the elements of timbre, texture, melody, rhythm, form, etc.) and anthropological concepts, such as identity, culture, fi eld research, etc. ,in the broader effort of understanding music as human activity with social functions and as cultural expression.
Conducting This course will develop basic conducting skills. It will explore and develop techniques associated with historically classical instrumental and vocal conducting, as well as contemporary genres and conducting/leading a group while also playing in the group. Prerequisite(s): Complete MUSIC-151. MUSIC-182 Credits:3 Composition for Advertising This is a class that applies music composition skills to the area of broadcast advertising music for radio and television commercials, in-house instructional videos, convention theme songs, and variations on a melodic theme for multi commercial campaigns, all within the con fi nes of the predetermined guidelines of the client’s speci fi c direction. The details of running a commercial production company will also be emphasized, including establishing a client base, demo writing, producing a fi nal production, keeping good books, fee structures and pitching skills. Prerequisite(s): Complete MUSIC-151. MUSIC-184 Credits:2 Ear Training 2 This course is the second in a sequence of aural skills development, building upon the foundational concepts introduced in MUSIC-174 Ear Training 1. The primary focus shifts from a purely diatonic framework to incorporate the complexities of minor keys, expanded harmonic vocabulary and more intricate rhythmic patterns. Students will continue to re fi ne their ability to translate musical sounds into notation and vice versa, enhancing their overall musicianship, improvisation and analytical skills. Prerequisite(s): Complete MUSIC-174. MUSIC-185 Bass Lab1 Bass Lab 1 is designed to meet the needs of the beginning bass guitar player. The course will acquaint the student with tuning, parts of the bass guitar and proper playing techniques. Course will also cover the basic skills of reading music in the bass clef. The student will perform simple music examples in class on their instrument. MUSIC-187 Credits:1 Guitar Lab 1 Group lessons instruction for beginners or guitarists who want to learn to read standard notation, including basic technique, music reading, chording, fundamentals of music theory, effective practice habits, lead sheets and tablature. Students must provide their own guitar. MUSIC-188 Credits:1 Guitar Lab 2 A continuation of MUSIC-187. Group lesson instruction to improve music reading skills, expand chord vocabulary, scales, understanding chord progressions, fi nger style guitar basics and barre chords. Students must provide their own guitar. Prerequisite(s): Complete MUSIC-187. Credits:1
