HIT – Health Information Technology (Department 530) HIT-120 Credits:2 Intro to Medical Reimbursement Investigates key trends that impact healthcare costs and reimbursement systems, including prospective payment methods and value-based purchasing. Learners compare government and non-government payers, explore payment methods and apply systems to maximize reimbursement. Additionally, learners will gain skills in managing claim processes and advocating for patients navigating healthcare services. Prerequisite(s): Must be admitted to the Health Information Technology program (10-530-1) or the Medical Coding Specialist program (31-530-2). Complete HIT-180, HIT-182, HIT-197 and HIT-199. HIT-121 Credits:3 Intro to Healthcare Data Analyst Covers essential healthcare data analytics skills, including using statistics and database design. Students will collect and analyze data, create visualizations, and report fi ndings. Practical exercises and real-world examples prepare students to excel in healthcare analytics. Prerequisite(s): Must be admitted to the Health Information Technology program (10-530-1). Complete HIT-162, HEALTH-107 and HIT-180. HIT-157 Credits:2 Revenue Cycle Management Develops skills in managing the revenue cycle by collaborating with teams, ensuring compliance and applying measures to improve ef fi ciency. Learners will evaluate coding practices for fraud and abuse, conduct audits, and handle appeals. Additionally, learners will analyze utilization data, manage the charge description master (CDM), and conduct clinical documentation improvement (CDI) activities to enhance documentation and reimbursement accuracy. Prerequisite(s): Complete HIT-120. Completion of or currently enrolled in HIT-184. HIT-158 Credits:3 Healthcare Law Develops skills to maintain a legally defensible health record, differentiate between legal health records and ensure compliance with regulations related to patient rights and con fi dentiality. Learners will interpret laws affecting health information, process requests for health data and prepare records for legal proceedings. Additionally, learners will analyze organizational policies for regulatory compliance, evaluate risk management data and recommend responses to breaches of professional ethics. Prerequisite(s): Must be admitted to the Health Information Technology program (10-530-1). Complete HIT 162 and HIT-180. Completion of or currently enrolled in HIT-190.

Intermediate Coding Prepares students to assign ICD and CPT/HCPCS codes supported by medical documentation and of fi cial coding guidance to support appropriate reimbursement. Students will participate in CDI activities, including preparation of appropriate physician queries in accordance with compliance guidelines. Additional Course Fees: Fees listed here are in addition to general tuition and are charged at registration. EHR Go Electronic Health Record: $70.00 AHIMA VLab Coding Program: $75.00. Prerequisite(s): Completion of or currently enrolled in HIT-184 and HIT-159. HIT-166 Credits:1 HIT Capstone Explore technical skills and professional attributes desired for the HIM profession and conduct activities to assess one’s own readiness to enter the health information industry. Prerequisite(s): Completion of or currently enrolled in HIT-196. HIT-167 Credits:3 Management of HIM Resources Examines the principles of management to include planning, organizing, human resource management, directing and controlling as related to the health information department. Prerequisite(s): Complete HIT-162 and HIT-165. HIT-178 Credits:2 Healthcare Law and Ethics Examines regulations for the content, use, con fi dentiality, disclosure and retention of health information. An overview of the legal system and ethical issues are addressed. Prerequisite(s): Complete HIT-162. HIT-179 Credits:3 Management and Performance Improvement Compares management theories and leadership styles while investigating the role of the HIM manager. Learners will conduct operational and human resource management activities and explore project management and performance improvement tools. Additionally, learners will utilize data analytics for strategic planning, evaluate performance data for trends and report outcomes to external agencies. Prerequisite(s): Must be admitted to the Health Information Technology program (10-530-1). Complete HIT-180, HIT-165 and HIT-121. Completion of or currently enrolled in HIT-190. HIT-180 Credits:2 Intro to Health Information Investigates the external forces shaping the healthcare delivery system, differentiating between types of organizations across the continuum of care. Learners will explore the roles and responsibilities of various healthcare providers and the interrelationships among them as well as the speci fi c duties of health information professionals. Additionally, learners will demonstrate professional ethical standards and examine both paper and electronic health records. Prerequisite(s): Complete HEALTH-101. Completion of or currently enrolled in HEALTH-107.

Healthcare Revenue Management Prepares learners to compare and contrast healthcare payers, illustrate the reimbursement cycle, and comply with regulations related to fraud and abuse. Learners assign payment classi fi cations with entry-level pro fi ciency using computerized encoding and grouping software. Prerequisite(s): Must admitted to Medical Coding Specialist program (30-530-2). Complete HIT-162, HIT-197, HIT-199 and HIT-182. Completion of or currently enrolled in HIT-184. HIT-161 Credits:3 Health Quality Management Explores the programs and processes used to manage and improve healthcare quality. Addresses regulatory requirements as related to performance measurement, assessment and improvement, required monitoring activities, risk management and patient safety, utilization management, and medical staff credentialing. Emphasizes the use of critical thinking and data analysis skills in the management and reporting of data. Prerequisite(s): Complete HIT-163. HIT-162 Credits:3 Foundations of HIM Introduces learners to the healthcare delivery system and the external forces that in fl uence healthcare delivery. Sets an understanding for the expectations and standards related to professional ethics, con fi dentiality and security of health information. Differentiates the use and structure of healthcare data elements, data standards and the relationships between them. Prepares learners to collect and maintain health data to ensure a complete and accurate health record. Prerequisite(s): Must be admitted to the Health Information Technology program (10 530-1) or Medical Coding Specialist program (31-530-2). Complete HEALTH-101. Completion of or currently enrolled in HEALTH-107. HIT-163 Credits:3 Healthcare Stats and Analytics Explores the management of medical data for statistical purposes focusing on descriptive and inferential statistics including de fi nition, collection, calculation and compilation of numerical data. Examines data analytics, retrieval, presentation and research methodologies. Prerequisite(s): Complete HIT 162 and HEALTH-107. HIT-164 Credits:3 Intro to Health Informatics Emphasizes the role of information technology in healthcare through an investigation of the electronic health record (EHR), business and health information software applications. Learners will develop skills to assist in enterprise information management and database architecture design and implementation. Prerequisite(s): Complete HIT-180 and HEALTH-107.
