MEDAST-304 Credits:4 Medical Assistant Clinical Procedures 1 Introduces medical assistant students to the clinical procedures performed in the medical o ffi ce setting. Students perform basic examining room skills including screening, vital signs, patient history, minor surgery and patient preparation for routine and specialty exams in the ambulatory care setting. Learner explores communication principles and psychology theories related to patient care. Prerequisite(s): Must be admitted to the Medical Assistant program (31-509-1). Completion of or currently enrolled in MEDAST-302 and MEDAST-303. MEDAST-305 Credits:2 Medical Asst Lab Procedures 22 Prepares students to perform phlebotomy and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) waived hematology, chemistry, immunology and laboratory procedures commonly performed by medical assistants in the ambulatory care setting. Prerequisite(s): Complete MEDAST-303 or CLABT-303. Must be admitted to the Medical Assistant program (31-509-1). MEDAST-306 Credits:3 Medical Asst Clinical Procedures 2 Prepares medical assistant students to perform patient care skills in the medical o ffi ce setting. Students perform clinical procedures including administering medications, performing an electrocardiogram, assisting with respiratory testing, coaching patients, and assisting with emergency situations in an ambulatory care setting. Students learn preventive care and principles of nutrition. Prerequisite(s): Complete MEDAST-304. Must be admitted to the Medical Assistant program (31-509-1). MEDAST-307 Credits:2 MedicalO ffi ce Insurance and Finance Introduces medical assistant students to health insurance and fi nance in the medical o ffi ce. Students perform bookkeeping procedures, apply managed care guidelines, and complete insurance claim forms. Students use medical coding and managed care terminology to perform insurance related duties. Prerequisite(s): Complete MEDAST-302. Must be admitted to the Medical Assistant program (31-509-1).

Pharmacy for Allied Health Introduces students to medication classi fi cation, basic pharmacology principles, and supplements. Students apply basic pharmacodynamics to identify common medications and calculate dosages in preparation for medication administration. Prerequisite(s): Complete MEDAST-302. Must be admitted to the Medical Assistant program (31-509-1). MEDAST-309 Credits:2 Medical Law, Ethics, and Professionalism Prepares students to display professionalism and perform within ethical and legal boundaries in the health care setting. Students maintain con fi dentiality, examine legal aspects of ambulatory healthcare, perform quality improvement procedures, examine legal and bioethical issues, and demonstrate awareness of diversity. Prerequisite(s): Must be admitted to Medical Assistant program (31-509-1). MEDAST-310 Credits:3 Medical Assistant Practicum Requires medical assistant students to integrate and apply knowledge and skills from all previous medical assistant courses in actual ambulatory health care settings. Learners perform medical assistant administrative, clinical, and laboratory duties under the supervision of trained mentors to e ff ectively transition to the role of a medical assistant. This is a supervised, unpaid, clinical experience. MAERB required Practicum - 160 minimum hours (MAERB minimum) up to 216 hours. Prerequisite(s): Complete MEDAST-301, MEDAST-302, MEDAST-303, MEDAST-304, and MEDAST-308. Must be admitted to the Medical Assistant program (31-509 1). MEDINT – Medical Interpreter (Department 538) MEDINT-101 Credits:3 Cultural Awareness Recognize, respect and accept di ff erences in customs, beliefs and behaviors in others. Intro to Medical Interpretation This course introduces the professions of translation and interpretation. The di ff erent types of translation and interpretation are explored. Actual translations will be done in class, as well as interpretation exercises. The language industry will be discussed, which includes freelance translation and interpretation. Comprehension assessment done during the class will determine the learner’s competency in both working languages. Prerequisite(s): Must be admitted to the Medical Interpreter program Applied Med Interpretation 1 Develop interpreting skills needed within the health care environment. Learning centers around general information on health care and the health care system, functions within hospital departments, healthcare procedures and the terms needed for interaction in the healthcare environment. Culture in interpreting and communication skills for advocacy are analyzed. MEDINT-106 Credits:3 Introduction to Medical Translation Fundamental overview of the intricacies of converting texts from one language to another within the context of healthcare services. Course work includes analysis and comprehension of English or Spanish source texts and the correct construction of writing in target languages. Explore selected materials, including patient information, medical journal articles and medico-legal documents and use sources available to medical translators. Prerequisite(s): Dual Language Pro fi ciency (English/Spanish). MEDINT-107 Credits:5 Bilingual Medical Terminology This course delineates a detailed analysis and application of medical terms in English and Spanish. It o ff ers the competencies required to meet or exceed the demands of medical interpreters and bilingual personnel within our nation’s healthcare systems as they work with patients of limited English pro fi ciency. Prerequisite(s): Dual Language Pro fi ciency (English/Spanish). MEDINT-108 Credits:3 Ethics & Standards for Med Interpreters This course delineates a critical overview of the applied ethics, risk management & legal practices found at local and national levels within healthcare organizations. It delineates the scope of service that must be observed by medical interpreters & bilingual personnel while working with patients of limited English pro fi ciency.
