TINY HOUSE LIVING by Angela Smith

More and more people are deciding to downsize their lives and opt to live in a tiny home. Tiny homes normally measure between 100 and 400 square feet and come in all shapes and sizes. However, most of them offer all amenities of a normal house like a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room, just scaled down. One of the benefits of tiny house living is the fact that you can put them just about anywhere. Tiny homes are popping up on waterfronts, in downtown urban areas, in the mountains and on large plots of land in the country. Some of the other benefits include a huge financial advantage, the freedom to add what you want and live where you want and be more environmentally friendly. If you’re thinking of joining the tiny house movement and finding your freedom in

the country, here are some tips from United Country’s guest blogger, Rose Burke from the Tiny House Society: Use environmentally friendly options. Tiny houses are often used for living off the grid, making it important to utilize eco-friendly methods. Incorporating things like water tanks, composting toilets, solar power and wind turbines can make a big difference and save you even more money. PLAN AHEAD. Being out in the country gives you limited access to grocery stores, shopping malls and health services. Make sure you keep a first aid kit on hand as well as other emergency tools like a fire extinguisher and fresh batteries. It’s also a good idea to start your own garden or have your own greenhouse to grow your own produce since buying in bulk may not be an option due to space.

BE ADAPTABLE. Country living is already very different from living in the city and even the suburbs, but you add a tiny home to the equation and it’s even more different. Learn as much as you can about the area, where the nearest stores and emergency services are and who takes care of the roads leading to your home. Being self-sufficient is key.
