KCU: Excellence in Academic Health Care

For more than 108 years, Kansas City University (KCU) has been chang ing health care for good. As a regionally accredited, not-for-profit private health sciences university with three colleges and two state-of-the-art campus loca tions—Kansas City, Missouri, and Jop lin, Missouri—KCU has been dedicated to addressing the needs of students, patients and communities across the region since our founding in 1916. Today, KCU continues our long tradi tion of academic excellence by lever aging innovative curricula, technology and partnerships to help ensure student success in the modern health care envi ronment while improving the well-being of the communities we serve. Medicine (COM)—one of the oldest in the nation—has called Kansas City’s Historic Northeast Neighborhood home for more than a century. In 2017, KCU opened a second medical school location in Joplin to help address the growing need for physicians in the region’s rural com munities. and has more than 10,000 physician alumni practicing around the world.

communities in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas as well as the development of the Harry M. Cornell Oral Health Center, an on-campus community clinic dedicated to provid ing patients in the Joplin region with affordable, high-quality dental ser vices in a teaching environment. Center for Medical Education Innovation In 2020, KCU unveiled the new Center for Medical Education Innova tion (CMEI), a 54,000 square-foot facili ty, where medical education transforms imagination into reality. The CMEI features advanced technologies that provide students opportunities to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients in repetition with real-world simula tion. Adaptive learning environments throughout the facility accommodate a variety of hands-on experiences, including training in physical diagnosis and osteopathic manipulative medicine. Center for Population Health and Equity In January 2024, KCU announced plans for a new Center for Population Health and Equity that will systemat ically educate students and engage communities in addressing the factors outside of the health care system that impact health—the social and structur al determinants that are the largest contributors to health inequities. The vision of the center is to address health needs of urban and rural com munities which share similar challeng es in vastly different environments. l

College of Biosciences

The KCU College of Biosciences has experienced exponential growth since its first class of 20 students graduated in 2006. Since then, more than 1,052 students have earned their master’s degree through either the one-year, pre-health professions program or the two-year, biomedical sciences research program. In 2017, KCU introduced a new doctoral program in clinical psychol ogy (PsyD), the only PsyD program in Missouri or Kansas, to meet the in creasing demand for behavioral health professionals in the region. The clini cal psychology program partners with KCU’s other academic programs to provide an interprofessional education environment that prepares students for the integration of behavioral health into team-based care. The KCU College of Dental Medicine (CDM), located on the University’s Far ber-McIntire Campus in Joplin, Missouri, officially opened and welcomed its first class of 80 students in summer 2023. KCU’s dental curriculum focuses on early clinical training and commu nity and population health, bolstered by clinical partnerships with organiza tions serving patients in underserved College of Dental Medicine
