by providing the resources Kansas Citians deserve and expect is the driving force with this merger. We want to create opportunities to serve the community in other ways by providing quality health-care jobs, educating the next generation of physicians and creating charitable opportunities for our team to impact others in need.” KCOA’s board certified physicians are trained to provide care for nearly every possible musculoskeletal injury or con dition. “We have specialists that can treat everything from bunions to spinal fusions. It’s always our goal to maximize and exhaust conservative measures before turning to surgi cal options,” said Scott Abraham, M.D. “But when a surgery is warranted, there’s no group better equipped from a tech nology and specialty perspective to serve patients and pro vide the best possible care available here in Kansas City.” Opportunities to partner with local business leaders and payers to create new and innovative ways to serve their employees and families have also been at the forefront of

Congratulations to Dr. Lowry Jones on being recog nized as a Top Doctor for 2021. Dr. Jones becomes the sixth orthopedic provider from the Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance to be recognized by Ingram’s since the inception of the Top Doctor’s issue in 1997. The Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance is the largest, independently owned orthopedic specialty practice in the Kansas City metro area. The alliance represents the merger of Apex Orthopedics & Sports Medicine , Dickson-Diveley Orthopedics , and Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Consultants . These practices have been in business in the Kansas City metro area for more than 140 years and have helped tens of thousands of patients during that time. Mark Rasmussen, M.D. and executive board member believes, “that this partnership should decrease people’s wait times to see an orthopedic expert. It’s not feasible for most people in pain or who have suffered an injury to

Pulse Design Group Bids Farewell to a Partner and Prepares for a Bright Future

Pulse Design Group, a healthcare architecture firm located on the Country Club Plaza, restructures and pre pares for the future. Recently celebrating 40 years in business, the firm has experienced substantial growth and has an aggressive strategy and vision to propel the firm for the next 40 years and beyond. Managing Principal Rick Embers, 63, was instrumen tal in building the company and officially retired on De cember 31, 2021. Rick stated, “I am excited to watch the firm continue to grow and am confident in the lead ership, positive momentum and vision of the firm.” Rick’s dedication and passion for advancing the field of healthcare design was paramount to the firm’s growth, as he was constantly leveraging technology and conducting research to deliver innovative, flexible design solutions. In 2007, under Rick’s leadership, the firm established its own in-house Medical Equipment Planning depart ment to provide comprehensive design services to cli ents. This service line allowed Pulse Design Group to de velop new relationships and expand its national presence. Rick was committed to utilizing emerging technolo gy as a design tool and created an in-house virtual reality department service line that enhanced and transformed the design industry. This tool enabled clients and end users to be immersed into virtual environments in real time to fully understand the design intent and functional ity of the proposed space. Throughout his professional career, Rick was dedi cated to advancing the field of healthcare design. He held licenses in 25 states and obtained numerous creden tials. In 2018, Rick was named a University of Kansas Distinguished Alumni for his continued support and in volvement. During his leadership, Pulse Design Group received a Best Companies to Work For award from Ingram’s Magazine in 2019, a testament to his servant leadership and dedication to his craft. Basil Sherman II,Michael Andracsek, andLindsayHamp ton, Pulse Design Group Principals, shared that “Rick’s guidance, mentorship, partnership, and selfless leadership approach helped sculpt our careers and that of all Pulse associates. His legacy will live on through all employees and continue to be reflected in the firm’s future success.” In advance and preparation of Rick’s retirement, firm leadership recruited Dennis Burns to bring his 20+ years of industry knowledge, strong network, and proven lead

ership to the firm. Dennis joined Pulse in 2020 as the firm’s first President, a deliberate and intentional move to ensure a seamless transition. Dennis’s strategy and vi sion complemented the firm’s leadership structure and aligned with its culture and strategic plan, which has been a critical component to the firm’s continued success.

this merger. “The way health care is delivered is changing rapidly,” said Kaplan. “Employers and payers are partner ing with providers to develop systems that are focused on providing a high level of care at the right value and is easy for patients to access. With the resources at our disposal, we’re going to be on the cutting edge of this movement. We’ve got the experts, like Drs. Jones, Cook, Rasmussen, Gurba, Clymer and Van den Berghe who have been rec ognized by Ingram’s for their outstanding patient care. We just need to work hard to create systems that let them flourish and do what they do best—take care of patients.”

wait six weeks to see a specialist. This merger and the continued expansion of the practice will allow patients to see a board-certified orthopedic expert faster than ever before. This has been studied and shown to lead to better outcomes and greater cost savings for people accessing care. That’s a win for everyone involved.” David Kaplan, CEO, has been leading the merger since his arrival in December 2020. He and the executive board of physician leaders at KCOA have been working hard to meld together these three legacy practices. “We believe this newly formed alliance is the beginning of something truly special that may eventually allow us to expand our services to more of a regional footprint,” stated Kaplan. “Patients have choices when it comes to the treatment of musculo skeletal injuries. We’re positioning ourselves to be the No. 1 resource they can turn to in Kansas City and beyond.” With more than 50 medical providers in four locations, KCOA is looking to expand its reach to help better serve the entire metro area. “We’re speaking with a lot of great potential partners in and around Kansas City, looking for the right opportunities to bring our top-level orthopedic care to meet people where they live, work, or play,” remarked Brian Divelbiss, M.D., president of the Kansas City Ortho pedic Alliance. “Meeting the needs of our community

Countless initiatives over the last decade have con tributed to the firm’s growth, including the development and careful execution of a forward-thinking strategic plan.
