Introducing the new editor-in chief of Lipids

After a year-long search, AOCS is excited to announce that Philip C. Calder, professor of nutri tional immunology in the Human Development and Health Academic Unit of the Faculty of Medi cine at the University of

(omega-6 fatty acids and conjugated linolic acid), other nutri ents, prebiotics, probiotics and whole foods, like salmon. His research links in vitro , animal model and human studies and includes a life course component. He is widely published and listed as a Highly Cited Author. Calder is a long-time member of AOCS and has received both the Ralph Holman Lifetime Achievement Award (2015) and the Stephen Chang Award (2023). He is also a member of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL). He hosted the 2004 ISSFAL Congress, was ISSFAL President (2009-2012), and is an ISSFAL Fellow (2018). Included among his many awards are the Normann Medal from the German Society for Fat Science (2012), the Danone International Prize for Nutrition (2016), the DSM Award for Lifetime Achievement in Human Nutrition (2017), the European Lipid Science Award 2021 from European Federation for Lipid Science & Technology, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Global Organisation for EPA and DHA (2024). He has served as President of the British and Irish Nutrition Society (2016-2019), the European Branch of the International Life Sciences Institute (2019-2021), and the Federation of European Nutrition Societies (2019-2023). Calder brings a wealth of experience in publications to his new role. He has served on many editorial boards. He was editor-in-chief of British Journal of Nutrition (2006-2013) and founding editor of the open access Journal of Nutritional Science . He has served on editorial boards of numerous jour nals in the fields of lipidology, biochemistry, nutrition and clinical science. He is a former associate editor of Lipids and is currently associate editor of Journal of Nutrition , Annals of Nutrition & Metabolism , Frontiers in Immunology and Clinical Science , and Lipid Metabolism and Therapy Section Editor for Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care . Calder says, “I thank AOCS for their confidence in me and I am really looking forward to this new role with Lipids . My intention is to ensure that the journal is in its rightful place as one of the leading journals in the lipidology field.” We wish him great success as Lipids EIC.

Southampton in the United Kingdom, has been appointed as the next editor-in-chief of the journal Lipids . Graham Burdge, the most recent editor-in-chief of Lipids , passed away of a brain tumor on February 1, 2024. Burdge was editor-in-chief of Lipids from 2020 until his illness forced him to step down in 2023. Burdge had lived with cancer and with its treatment for many years. Sadly, in early 2023 his condition deteriorated and by May it was clear he had to give up work. In August 2023, Burdge withdrew early from his five-year term as Lipids editor-in-chief AOCS considered several applicants for the vacancy; how ever, none of those applicants had the combination of editorial experience and spare time needed to commit to the role. To our delight, Calder expressed interest and the selection com mittee unanimously recommended his appointment as EIC to the Governing Board for approval. Calder was instated as Lipids EIC on July 1, 2024. Calder has a BS and a PhD in biochemistry and began research on fatty acids as a postdoctoral researcher in 1987. He has studied fatty acid metabolism and functionality, focus ing mainly on the immune and inflammatory systems, with an emphasis on plant- and fish-sourced omega-3 fatty acids; although, he has conducted research on other fatty acids
