ART WORTH TRAVELING FOR BY SAMANTHA MYERS
WITH MAJOR ART EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS AND MUSEUM OPENINGS PLANNED ACROSS THE GLOBE, 2017 IS SHAPING UP TO BE AN IMPORTANT YEAR FOR ART.
F rom the 57th Venice Biennale, to a traveling exhibition allowing viewers to experi- ence infinity, all the way to the shores of Cape Town for the opening of Africa’s first contemporary art museum of its kind, these are the most talked about events in the art world. Perhaps a few of these happenings will coincide with trips already planned … or even inspire a vacation of its own.
This photo by Piero Berengo Gardin of Italian artist Maria Lai’s (1919–2013) Legarsi alla montagna (Italian for “Bind to the mountains”) will be among the work featured at the Venice Biennale. Lai’s 1981 public art event brought a local legend to life, as blue ribbon was used to tie the community together, all the way from the doors and balconies of the homes to the top of the mountain, prompting villagers to party in the streets.
