WHAT MAKES THIS FLOOR UNIQUE: AG Floor Covering in Deer Park, Washington, has earned the 2026 WFOY Best in Parquetry award for a 270-square-foot geometric parquet floor that serves as the centerpiece of a private residence. The design draws on a tradition of intricate mosaic and parquet work, combining red oak, jatoba, maple, and American cherry to create a floor with depth, movement, and visual contrast. The variation in wood tone and grain direction is further enhanced by the room’s natural light, which draws out the character of each species throughout the day. The room presented an immediate challenge, as it was not square, requiring careful calculation to ensure the border landed point to point on all sides. Nearly a week was spent snapping out lines and drawing the design by hand before a single piece of wood was cut. All material is three-quarter-inch solid, glued and nailed directly to the subfloor without a plywood layer, demanding precision at every stage. The center field was framed out first, with the border and perpendicular frieze pieces set at 45-degree angles, then the interior filled in. Acclimation and subfloor preparation were treated as the foundation of the entire project, with moisture levels verified and the surface confirmed flat and stable before installation began. The completed floor was sanded and finished with Bona Traffic HD Water Based in satin, a water-based choice made to preserve the natural color of the wood and allow each species to read clearly without an amber cast. The result is a floor that reflects years of experience in decorative hardwood work and a commitment to getting every detail right before the first piece goes down.
