WHAT MAKES THIS FLOOR UNIQUE: Cardona Flooring in Stamford, Connecticut, has earned the 2026 WFOY Best in Colors/Finishes and Textured Wood award for a 250-square-foot mosaic floor that draws on centuries of design tradition. The project came about when the homeowner saw the company's work on a nearby project and commissioned a floor for his home office. When the team arrived, they suggested incorporating reclaimed structural pine uncovered during a renovation, weaving it together with cherry and maple for contrast and warmth. The design moves from a central star medallion outward through a series

of rings, herringbone sections, and ornamental curves, blending elements of ancient mosaic tradition with the flowing forms of the Rococo era. Every piece was hand-cut on site using a jigsaw, table saw, and chop saw, then glued down individually during the course of two weeks. The reclaimed pine forms the lighter circular pathways that radiate outward, while oak fills the herringbone sections and cherry and oak form the ornamental curves surrounding them. The color and finish set this floor apart. Working with Avedis Duvenjian of Archetypal Imagery, the team applied multiple layers of LED-cured hardwax oil to create a dimensional effect, with the star appearing to rise from the surface. The LED curing process allowed color to be applied, adjusted, and locked

in quickly, layer by layer, enabling a depth and graduation of tone that would be difficult to achieve with conventional finishing methods. An LED Coating Solutions topcoat sealed the final result.
