Get to know Appalachian Lumber Co.

Founded in 1982, Appalachian Lumber Co., Inc. is a family-owned business located in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. The custom wood products manufacturer has a focus on flooring, stair parts, mouldings, millwork, and furniture parts. As long-time members of the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), they have attended the Wood Flooring Expo for approximately 30 years and have exhibited proudly there for two decades. They also have earned NWFA/NOFMA certification. Learn more about their offerings in this Q&A with William Church, president of Appalachian Lumber Co. How did the company begin? Having grown up in the forest products industry, I recognized a void in the market for high-quality custom interior wood products. Located in the heart of the furniture belt, early on we benefited from access to skilled woodworkers and an abundant supply of premium raw materials. We began by manufacturing a variety of wall paneling and mouldings, with v-groove knotty white pine quickly becoming our best-selling product. Its timeless character and natural warmth made it a favorite among customers. In what ways has your business evolved since that time? In the years that followed, the company experienced its share of changes, while consistently maintaining our commitment to craftsmanship, attention to detail, and quality. As we grew, we expanded our offerings in interior millwork and flooring for the building industry. During the 1990s, as much of the U.S. furniture industry moved overseas, strategically we shifted our emphasis toward the building industry. We increased production capabilities significantly in hardwood flooring, mouldings, and stair parts to meet growing demand.

Today, we manufacture both solid and engineered hardwood flooring in more than 20 species. In those same species, we produce matching mouldings, stair parts, wall paneling, and a wide range of custom wood products. Which product is your company most known for when it comes to wood flooring? Appalachian Lumber is known for our engineered plank flooring and matching stair parts, offering widths from 1” to 11”, with end-matched lengths up to 16’. Our capabilities allow us to handle large-scale projects efficiently, while remaining agile enough to accommodate custom specifications and smaller production runs. The focus always has been on unique and hard-to-find hardwood products, as we take pride in bringing our customers’ ideas to life. In addition to wide plank flooring, we produce herringbone, chevron, and other custom pattern floors. Custom stair parts have become an increasingly vital part of our product line, particularly with the growing demand for oversized and floating treads. What are you most excited about that is new or coming soon from your company? We have one of the only renewable resources available to the most discerning buyers. We plan to increase our focus on custom pattern floors and parquetry and will have the capability to produce super wide floors in the latter half of 2026.
