THESE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE COMMON CAUSES FOR SANDING MARKS
– Grit or debris le behind on the ooring that wasn’t adequately vacuumed or removed during the sanding process, a ecting the subsequent scratch pa erns – Skipped steps in the sanding process – Knots or density di erentials in the ooring causing sanding inconsistencies – Sanding of a oor assembled of mixed species of di erent hardness characteristics such that material is removed at di erent rates through the sanding process (e.g., borders, feature strips, medallions) • Machine related: – Improperly installed paper on a oor sander – Poorly maintained machine
• Sanding process related: – Poor workmanship/sloppiness – Running the machine in the wrong direction or an inadequate rst cut angle – Running the machine too slow, too fast, or at an inconsistent pace, or an inconsistent operator walking speed, or too much drum pressure – Not enough overlap with each pass of the big machine, the bu er, or the multi-head sander – Power surges during operation/inadequate power to the machine – Running the machine outside of the manufacturer’s recommendations – “Heeling” the bu er or improper clocking of the bu er or edger
