Dear Goose Creek CISD Community

Once again, the fall season in Goose Creek proved to be an exciting one, with several of our high school programs advancing to the postseason. In water polo, Sterling High School’s men’s and women’s teams, led by Coach Thomas Butcher and Coach Clym Gatrell, respectively, advanced to the area round of the state playoffs. The swimming season quickly followed water polo, and this program made history for Sterling as they sent a large majority of the team into the regional round in Fort Bend ISD. Coach Nava’s volleyball program at GCM also earned a spot in the playoffs in their first season in 6A. As a side bonus, her program is sending several players to the next level, including LSU commit Sanaa Donaie. We also had all three of our tennis teams qualify for the playoffs with GCM (Coach Ismael Dutchover), Sterling (Coach Doug Spaniel), and Lee (Coach Brandon Funderburg) advancing out of district.

Sterling made a playoff run for the fifth consecutive year by defeating La Porte in the first round and Kingwood Park in the second round, before falling in the regional quarterfinal. Cross Country also continued to show success with the Lee Men’s Team (Coach Kiersten Dutton), GCM Boy’s Individual (Coach William Freeman), and Sterling Men’s Individual (Coach Elizabeth Ridley), all qualifying for their classifications UIL Regional Meet. As a community, we are incredibly proud of all the student athletes in Goose Creek CISD and enjoy celebrating the successes of each team and individual, as well as the efforts of everyone who represents their school through competition. We look forward to the upcoming winter and spring seasons and proving why Goose Creek CISD is a great place to be. Let’s keep growing GIANTS! Lee Martinez Director of Athletics
