Dear Goose Creek CISD Community
Once again, the fall season in Goose Creek proved to be an exciting one, with several of our high school programs advancing to the postseason. In water polo, Sterling High School’s men’s and women’s teams, led by Coach Thomas Butcher and Coach Clym Gatrell, respectively, advanced to the area round of the state playoffs. The swimming season quickly followed water polo, and this program made history for Sterling as they sent a large majority of the team into the regional round in Fort Bend ISD. Coach Nava’s volleyball program at GCM also earned a spot in the playoffs in their first season in 6A. As a side bonus, her program is sending several players to the next level, including LSU commit Sanaa Donaie. We also had all three of our tennis teams qualify for the playoffs with GCM (Coach Ismael Dutchover), Sterling (Coach Doug Spaniel), and Lee (Coach Brandon Funderburg) advancing out of district.
Sterling made a playoff run for the fifth consecutive year by defeating La Porte in the first round and Kingwood Park in the second round, before falling in the regional quarterfinal. Cross Country also continued to show success with the Lee Men’s Team (Coach Kiersten Dutton), GCM Boy’s Individual (Coach William Freeman), and Sterling Men’s Individual (Coach Elizabeth Ridley), all qualifying for their classifications UIL Regional Meet. As a community, we are incredibly proud of all the student athletes in Goose Creek CISD and enjoy celebrating the successes of each team and individual, as well as the efforts of everyone who represents their school through competition. We look forward to the upcoming winter and spring seasons and proving why Goose Creek CISD is a great place to be. Let’s keep growing GIANTS! Lee Martinez Director of Athletics

Dear Goose Creek Families
In Goose Creek CISD, athletics is more than just part of our extracurricular offerings—it’s a powerful extension of our educational mission. On any given afternoon, whether you walk into a gym, a stadium, or onto a practice field, you’ll find students learning life lessons that can’t always be taught in the classroom. They’re learning perseverance in the weight room. Teamwork on the court. Leadership in the huddle. And perhaps most importantly, they’re learning how to rise after a setback—an experience that prepares them for the challenges beyond high school. Our coaches play an essential role in that transformation. They don’t just teach plays—they build character. They set high expectations and hold students accountable, all while offering the kind of encouragement that sticks with a person for life. They are mentors, motivators, and often, the steady hand guiding a young person through a pivotal chapter of their development. Goose Creek CISD is proud of the accomplishments our athletic programs have achieved, but we’re even prouder of the people they help
shape. Whether it’s a buzzer-beater in basketball, a hard-fought football game under the Friday night lights, or the quiet determination of a cross country runner chasing a personal record, each moment is a chance to grow. Athletics connects us. It unites our campuses and our community. It gives families a reason to come together, cheer, and celebrate what’s possible when talent is matched with hard work and support. So, as we reflect on this season and all it represents, let us continue to support our student-athletes—not just for the points they score but for the growth they demonstrate, the character they develop, and the impact they have on their teammates and the surrounding community. Thank you for supporting Goose Creek CISD athletics. Our students may compete in different sports, but they all share a common pursuit: to be their very best—and that’s something worth celebrating. Best Regards, Randal O’Brien, Ed.D Superintendent of Schools

GOOSE CREEK CISD CELEBRATES SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNITION MONTH
recognized as Apple Distinguished Schools, three career academies have been celebrated as national models, our P-TECH designated campus continues to grow, and AVID Demonstration School status was accomplished—all of which contribute to the ongoing success of our students. The school board’s dedication to state-of-the-art early learning academies and college and career readiness programs is transforming lives and shaping brighter futures. These achievements reflect the power of your leadership and determination to continuously improve our schools and strengthen our community. As a token of appreciation, students and staff throughout the district have come together to express their gratitude in creative and heartfelt ways. School campuses have designed and displayed posters honoring board members, each reflecting the appreciation felt by students and educators alike. These visual tributes serve as a small but meaningful acknowledgment of the board’s continuous support and dedication. In addition to the posters, campuses have also shared messages of appreciation through social media, posting heartfelt thank-you messages highlighting the impact of the trustees’ leadership. Beyond our students and staff, proclamations were presented from the City of Baytown, as well as certificates from county commissioners, a resolution from state representative Ana Hernandez, and a donation of books. As the district takes this moment to honor its trustees, it is clear that their service has profoundly impacted the more than 24,000 students in our district. The students, staff, and entire Goose Creek CISD community extend their deepest gratitude for the board’s dedication to building a brighter future for all. Their leadership embodies the spirit of Leadership for Tomorrow’s Texas, and their efforts continue to shape our district’s education path.
Each January, Goose Creek CISD proudly joins communities across Texas in celebrating School Board Recognition Month, a time to honor the dedicated individuals who generously volunteer their time and expertise to ensure the success of our students and schools. School board trustees play a vital role in shaping the future of education, providing leadership and guidance that help create meaningful learning experiences and opportunities for all students. This year’s theme, “Leadership for Tomorrow’s Texas,” perfectly reflects the invaluable contributions of our school board members. Their vision, dedication, and service help prepare students for success in college, careers, and beyond. Their efforts go beyond policy and decision-making; they impact the lives of students and staff by championing initiatives that enhance education, promote innovation, and strengthen the entire school community. Over the past year, our district has achieved remarkable milestones that showcase our commitment to excellence and innovation. From maintaining competitive teacher pay to earning the Trusted Learning Environment Seal for data security and safety, we’ve set new standards in education. Additionally, six of our schools have been

GOOSE CREEK MEMORIAL DELIVERED PLENTY OF HIGHLIGHTS ACROSS EACH TEAM’S RESPECTIVE FIELD OF PLAY THIS WINTER. ON THE PITCH, THE GCM GIRLS’ SOCCER TEAM REMAINS IN THE HUNT FOR A COVETED PLAYOFF SPOT AS THEY LOOK TO BUILD ON THEIR HISTORIC 2024 RUN, WHICH SAW THEM ADVANCE TO THE REGIONAL SEMIFINALS. MEANWHILE, THE BOYS’ SOCCER TEAM, LED BY COACH WILLIAM FREEMAN, IS ADJUSTING TO THE HIGHER LEVEL OF COMPETITION IN DISTRICT 23-6A WHILE AIMING FOR A POSTSEASON PUSH OF THEIR OWN. BOTH THE GIRLS’ AND BOYS’ BASKETBALL TEAMS FINISHED JUST OUTSIDE THE PLAYOFF PICTURE, BUT THE PATRIOTS REMAINED HIGHLY COMPETITIVE THANKS TO STANDOUT PERFORMANCES FROM SEVERAL KEY PLAYERS. ON THE GIRLS’ SIDE, CARINNE BOUIE, RUBY MOSLEY, AND KINDALL HOUSTON MADE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT, WHILE JAXON WOODS, SEBASTIAN LOPEZ, AND BRYSON SIMMONS WERE AMONG THE KEY CONTRIBUTORS FOR THE BOYS’ SQUAD.

THE VIBE THIS YEAR IS JUST ACCEPTING THE ‘UNDERDOG’ MENTALITY, AND REALLY LOOKING TO GO IN AND SURPRISE SOME PEOPLE. THESE KIDS UNDERSTAND WHAT SOME OPPONENTS MIGHT EXPECT OF US, AND THAT HONESTLY DRIVES THEM. BECAUSE WE AREN’T THE TEAM THAT WE USED TO BE, AND THE GIRLS HAVE REALLY BOUGHT INTO THAT. MOVING ON UP
GCM BASEBALL LOOKS TO MAKE INTRODUCTION IN NEW DISTRICT, CLASSIFICATION
Despite the fact that Goose Creek Memorial finished on the right side of .500 a year ago, with a 16-12 record, they were narrowly denied entry into the postseason after ending up just outside of the fourth seed in their previous district of 17-5A. Under the direction of head coach George Banda, the Patriots will look to make a name for themselves against a different slate of opponents, as they ascend to District 23-6A in 2025. Seniors Abraham Greene (IF) and Camron Cantu (OF/P) will provide the veteran leadership for a group that also includes fellow seniors, Nolan Reznicek (OF/P) and John Gallegos (C/P), as well as sophomores Easton Brunson (P/1B) and Bryant Balderas (P). It won’t get any easier for GCM, as they’ll have to match up against elite programs such as Kingwood, Atascocita, and Summer Creek, but don’t count them out just yet. There’s plenty of potential for them to take advantage of in their new setting.

COOLER HEADS PREVAIL GREENE AIMS TO HELP GCM RETAIN ITS FOCUS AS THEY MOVE UP TO 6A
\\ Matthew Ogle
GOOSE CREEK MEMORIAL’S ABRAHAM GREENE HAS BEEN A STEADY PRESENCE FOR THE PATRIOTS, BOTH AS A COMPETITOR AND AS A LEADER. After earning all-district honorable mention honors in 2024, he now looks to help guide his team to new heights in his final high school season. For the senior infielder, baseball has been more than just a game—it’s been a lifelong dedication, fueled by the support of his family. “My dad has had a big influence on me as I’ve continued to play baseball,” Greene said. “From the days when he was my coach to traveling across the country, I’m very appreciative of the support that he and my mom have provided all these years. I wouldn’t have the same drive to compete without them.” That mindset will be crucial as Goose Creek Memorial moves up to District 23-6A this season, facing tougher competition. The Patriots narrowly missed the playoffs last year, but Greene believes the key to making a postseason push lies in the team’s mentality. “I feel like we’ll have to take a more selfless approach when it comes to the back half of our season,” he said. “We’re going to have to come together as a whole in order for everyone to link up and do their jobs. It’s going to be a tough task, but I’m confident we’ll be able to get the job done.” While baseball is a major focus, Greene also understands the importance of balance. Away from the field, he enjoys fishing with friends—a pastime that helps him clear his mind from the pressures of school and athletics. But even as his high school career winds down, his time on the diamond isn’t coming to an end. Greene will continue his athletic journey at Centenary College of Louisiana, where he’ll play baseball while pursuing a degree in Business with a minor in Mathematics. “It’s a great feeling to know that I’ll have another place to keep playing,” he said. “The way the coaching staff spoke to me made me feel at ease, like I’d feel at home once I’m there. Not many people get the opportunity to keep competing past high school, so it’s really a blessing.” For now, though, Greene remains focused on leading GCM through a challenging district schedule, determined to leave his mark before taking the next step in his career.

Like every other athletics program at their school, Goose Creek Memorial’s track & field team will face tougher competition this spring as they make the jump to Class 6A. However, the Patriots aren’t backing down from the challenge. With a deep roster of talented athletes ready to represent the black and red on the biggest stage, GCM is poised to make an impact. Under the leadership of coaches Marlon Taplin McMillan (boys) and ShaTeira Montgomery (girls), the Patriots will look to make their mark once the District Meet begins in April. TRACK HAS BECOME ONE OF MULTIPLE CALLINGS FOR GCM’S DOUGLAS PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
\\ Matthew Ogle
SURROUNDED BY HER TEAMMATES, KIMORA DOUGLAS RADIATES THE ENERGY OF A NATURAL LEADER—AN INTEGRAL PRESENCE IN GOOSE CREEK MEMORIAL’S TRACK & FIELD PROGRAM. But her infectious positivity is something she has only recently embraced. “Because I grew up during COVID, I was pretty antisocial as a child,” Douglas admitted with a laugh. “So, I decided to put myself in a bunch of sports to break out of my shell. I played volleyball, tennis, and a few others, but track ended up speaking to me the most. “I was immediately placed in hurdles because of my long legs and height for my age at the time. I’ve stuck with it since, and now it’s my passion. I do a lot of training outside of school because you can’t be a true athlete unless you’re willing to put in the work when no one is watching.” Hurdles have become Douglas’ specialty. The Goose Creek Memorial junior placed in the top five of both the 100m and 300m hurdles at last year’s district meet. But despite that strong showing, she has her sights set even higher this season. “I’m hoping to set some PRs (personal records), especially in the hurdling events,” she said. “Endurance is something I’ve really been focusing on, and I’m finally seeing improvements in my times. I wasn’t too happy with how I finished last season, so this year is my comeback.” While track has helped
Russell.
She has a mentor in her career aspirations, but what about in track? “I love me some Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone,” Douglas said, referring to the world record holder in the 400m hurdles. “Since I started running, she’s been someone I look up to, not just for her role on Team USA but also for her incredible length and stride.” She’s also inspired by 2024 Olympic gold medalist Masai
Douglas find confidence, it wasn’t her first passion. “I’ve always loved medicine,” she shared. “My aunt is a director of nurses, and I’ve wanted to follow in her footsteps while focusing on radiology. Even though I’ve had my moments, I try to be a happy, energetic person because spreading positivity is important to me. My goal is to help others get better— both in life and, eventually, in the medical field.”
“I love her technique and the energy she brings,” Douglas said. “She doesn’t let anything rattle her, which is something I admire.” As the season unfolds, Douglas hopes to make her own mark—both with her performances and the energy she brings to the track. With months of preparation behind her, she’s ready to make her presence felt at the district meet in April.

You can always get a little better every time you step on the track. Just a little faster.” VYPE: What can you see yourself doing in 3-5 years? NOWELL: “I want to go to school in order to learn welding and do that for a little while. Then move up into some sort of management from there.” VYPE: What is your personal goal in track this season? NOWELL: “I love competition. Sure, I want to win some medals, but I want to see our little team go out there and compete with the big schools. I want to show them that we are going to stand our ground. VYPE: What is your dream car? NOWELL: “A Camaro or a Corvette.” VYPE: What celebrity would you want to date? I was initially drawn to Kansas Wesleyan because it offered the ability to study nursing while getting to play the sport that I love.” Smith had similar priorities when choosing her college. “Just like Kendell, I’m also intending to become a nurse,” she said. “We both had opportunities to go D1, but we put an emphasis on our future, in addition to our playing careers, which is why I chose St. Thomas.” Before they move on to the next level, their focus remains on helping Sterling make a push for the postseason. “We’re a very young team, so there’s a lot of bonding that comes with that in order to get from the 5-hole to the 4-hole,” Wilcox said. Smith added that this year’s squad has embraced a key mindset. “A word that we came up with this year is ‘diligence,’” she said. “We need to be willing to work hard and show up if we’re going to pursue our goal of surprising people.” With their leadership, experience, and determination, Wilcox and Smith are hoping to leave a lasting impact on the program before they take the next step in their careers.

irreplaceable.” Smith’s journey to softball took a slightly different path. “I actually started off in baseball before making the switch over to softball,” she said. “Eventually, I got onto the same team that Kendell did, and we’ve been together for most of our lives.” That long-standing chemistry has carried over to the field at Sterling, where Wilcox and Smith play off each other’s strengths. “Since we’ve played together for so long, we can stay in tune just by giving a look,” Wilcox said. “At this point, we can read each other on the field, and I feel that gives us a subtle
FOR SENIORS KENDELL WILCOX AND SIMYAH SMITH, SOFTBALL HAS BEEN MORE THAN JUST A SPORT—IT’S BEEN THE FOUNDATION OF THEIR FRIENDSHIP, THEIR LEADERSHIP, AND THEIR FUTURE. As key figures for Baytown Sterling’s softball program, both players have spent years developing their skills together, pushing each other to new heights. “I’ve just always been in softball for as long as I can remember,” Wilcox said. “The social aspect of it all has really resonated with me, since I get to play all over the country with my club team. The impact that has on you is
Smith echoed that sentiment, emphasizing their leadership role on the team. “We’ve known each other for so long, so it’s really about posing that demeanor to the other girls,” she said. “I also go by this Bible verse— Ecclesiastes 4:9-10: ‘Two people are better than one. For if one person falls, the other can reach out and help.’ I feel that sums us up best.” As much as they’ve grown together at Sterling, Wilcox and Smith are also preparing for the next step. Both have signed to play at the collegiate level—Wilcox with Kansas Wesleyan University and Smith with the

EXPECTATIONS CONTINUE TO GROW FOR STERLING TRACK & FIELD FIRST TO THE FINISH
As the Rangers gear up for another season of intrigue, one question still remains: Do they have what it takes to reach State? Sterling featured numerous competitors at the UIL Region III-5A Meet last April, but fell just short of qualifying for Austin. So, is this the year they finally reach the grand stage? With coaches Kelly Walker and Jalan Batiste leading the boys’ and girls’ programs,
respectively, there is ample opportunity for Sterling to achieve their ultimate goal in Class 5A. Individually, Irad Mixon, Nevaeh Fontenot, Ryan Sylvester, Alaina Laday, Jakkari Hall, and Kayla Myers are among the front-runners to provide RSS with the valuable points necessary to obtain a new precedent
for the program. Stay tuned for where this team winds up in the coming months.

LEVELING UP STERLING’S MIXON ON AN UPWARDS TRAJECTORY IN 2025
\\ Matthew Ogle
FOR IRAD MIXON, SPEED HAS ALWAYS COME NATURALLY. From the moment he tested himself in third grade, it was clear he had something special. “I stepped on the track and just burned everyone,” Mixon said with a laugh. “Ever since then, I’ve loved the thrill of it all, since I tend to be a really competitive person. It’s an exhilarating feeling to test the true physicality of who you are as an athlete. It feels like home to me, so that’s where I stay.” Now a senior at Baytown Sterling, Mixon has turned that early passion into proven success. Last season, he captured gold in the 400m Dash at the District Meet before placing third at the Area level, securing a spot at Regionals. He also helped Sterling’s 4x200 Relay team reach the Regional stage, further cementing his role as a leader on the squad. But Mixon isn’t satisfied. He has even greater ambitions in his final campaign. “I’ve become really focused on my goals since last year,” he said. “I know what I’m capable of. I don’t want to just finish in the Top 3 at the area meet—I want to win it. More so than that, I want to do well enough at Regionals to get my place at State.” Mixon has spent all four years with the Rangers, and he credits the program for helping him develop into the competitor he is today. “Being with this team has definitely boosted my confidence,” he said. “That’s not always an easy thing to do, especially when you compete against other talented opponents. But Sterling has helped me stay focused on what I can accomplish. As long as I stay on track, I know I can be comfortable with the results.” While track is his primary focus, Mixon also has plans beyond the sport. He intends to pursue a degree in electrical engineering while hoping to continue his athletic career at the next level. When he’s not training or competing, Mixon enjoys unwinding with his favorite shows— Game of Thrones , The 100 , and Alice in Borderland . However, his current attention is directed toward the last stretch of his high school career. With a decorated resume already built, Mixon is determined to make his senior season his best yet—one that could end on the biggest stage in Texas high school track and field.

MAKING AN IMPRESSION IMPACT EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL BECOMES FIRST EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL IN THE NATION TO EARN AVID NATIONAL DEMONSTRATION SCHOOL STATUS
IMPACT Early College High School has made history as the first Early College High School in the nation to earn the prestigious AVID National Demonstration School designation. This honor highlights IMPACT’s commitment to student success and college readiness. AVID National Demonstration Schools serve as exemplary models for the AVID College Readiness System, showcasing best practices in instruction, leadership, and systems that help students develop the skills necessary for success in higher education and beyond. “AVID is in our culture at IMPACT. We have high expectations for students, we believe in them, and we support them,” said Laura Reyes, Principal of IMPACT Early College High School. “We want people to understand that our student makeup is the same as every other campus in the district. As an IMPACT family, we are breaking barriers and creating generational change.” Goose Creek CISD Superintendent Dr. Randal O’Brien also praised the school’s accomplishment: “This distinction is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our educators and students. AVID provides a strong foundation that helps students develop the skills and confidence needed to excel in both high school and college. IMPACT has set a remarkable example for schools across the
country, and we couldn’t be prouder.” Sally Wagner, AVID Regional Director and Demonstration Coach, commended the campus for its exceptional impact. “I don’t think you know how special this campus is. This campus is magic. I am on campuses every day all over the Houston area. You are changing the lives of students in Goose Creek CISD.” The AVID program emphasizes skills such as critical thinking, organization, and inquiry-based learning. For students like Kayla Grant, an 11th grader at IMPACT, the effect of AVID strategies has been life-changing. “Focused note-taking has been a game-changer for me. Being able to look back and use the notes I have taken in class is invaluable,” said Grant. “Calculus is a beast in and of itself; college moves so fast, and everything builds on the previous concept. Having great notes has changed my life and made me successful. I will use focused notes for the rest of my life.” IMPACT Early College High School’s distinction as an AVID National Demonstration School will allow it to serve as a model for schools across the country, sharing best practices and inspiring others to implement AVID’s proven strategies.
