Once again, it proved to be an exciting fall season in Goose Creek with several of our high school programs advancing to the postseason. In the first-ever season of UIL water polo, Sterling High School had both their men’s and women’s teams, led by coach Tara Fielder and coach Clym Gatrell, push their way into the Area round of the State playoffs. The swimming season quickly followed water polo, and this program made history for Sterling as they sent a large majority of the team into the Regional round in Fort Bend ISD with five individuals and five relays qualifying for the finals on the second day of the meet. This was the first time that GCCISD has sent this many swimmers into the final round. Coach Candace Southall’s volleyball program at Sterling also earned a spot in the playoffs by placing second in district and beating out Texas City to advance to the Area round. As a side bonus, her program also received the American Volleyball Coaches Association Academic Award for the 28th consecutive year, giving them the longest streak in the country of holding that honor at any level (including all collegiate programs). This program celebrated many all-district honors, with Ty Joseph (SFA commit) earning Co-MVP, Katy Barger as Offensive Player of the Year, Ashley Aguilar with Setter of the Year, and coach Southall
as Co-Coach of the Year. We also had two of our tennis teams qualify for the playoffs with both GCM (coach Ismael Dutchover) and Sterling (coach John Tremmel) advancing out of district. Sterling made a playoff run for the third year in a row by defeating Texas City in the first round and Fulshear in the second round until falling in the Regional Quarterfinal. Cross Country also continued to show success with the GCM men’s team (coach William Freeman), GCM women’s team (coach Roman Huizar), and Sterling men’s team (coach Ron McDowell) all qualifying for the UIL Regional Meet in Huntsville. This year we had high hopes of sending somebody to the State competition and Brock Glasscock of Sterling met that challenge. He made his way out of the Regional Meet and then competed in Round Rock and placed 37th of 151 of the best runners in the state. As a community, we are extremely proud of all of the student athletes in Goose Creek CISD and enjoy celebrating the successes of each of these teams and individuals as well as the efforts of every one of them that represent their schools through competition. We look forward to the upcoming winter and spring seasons and proving why GCCISD is a great place to be. Lee Martinez Director of Athletics
