Once again, it proved to be an exciting fall season in Goose Creek with several of our high school programs advancing to the postseason. In the first-ever season of UIL water polo, Sterling High School had both their men’s and women’s teams, led by coach Tara Fielder and coach Clym Gatrell, push their way into the Area round of the State playoffs. The swimming season quickly followed water polo, and this program made history for Sterling as they sent a large majority of the team into the Regional round in Fort Bend ISD with five individuals and five relays qualifying for the finals on the second day of the meet. This was the first time that GCCISD has sent this many swimmers into the final round. Coach Candace Southall’s volleyball program at Sterling also earned a spot in the playoffs by placing second in district and beating out Texas City to advance to the Area round. As a side bonus, her program also received the American Volleyball Coaches Association Academic Award for the 28th consecutive year, giving them the longest streak in the country of holding that honor at any level (including all collegiate programs). This program celebrated many all-district honors, with Ty Joseph (SFA commit) earning Co-MVP, Katy Barger as Offensive Player of the Year, Ashley Aguilar with Setter of the Year, and coach Southall
as Co-Coach of the Year. We also had two of our tennis teams qualify for the playoffs with both GCM (coach Ismael Dutchover) and Sterling (coach John Tremmel) advancing out of district. Sterling made a playoff run for the third year in a row by defeating Texas City in the first round and Fulshear in the second round until falling in the Regional Quarterfinal. Cross Country also continued to show success with the GCM men’s team (coach William Freeman), GCM women’s team (coach Roman Huizar), and Sterling men’s team (coach Ron McDowell) all qualifying for the UIL Regional Meet in Huntsville. This year we had high hopes of sending somebody to the State competition and Brock Glasscock of Sterling met that challenge. He made his way out of the Regional Meet and then competed in Round Rock and placed 37th of 151 of the best runners in the state. As a community, we are extremely proud of all of the student athletes in Goose Creek CISD and enjoy celebrating the successes of each of these teams and individuals as well as the efforts of every one of them that represent their schools through competition. We look forward to the upcoming winter and spring seasons and proving why GCCISD is a great place to be. Lee Martinez Director of Athletics

BUILDING GIANTS
The 2022-2023 school year has been filled with many successes. Our students and staff have weathered the storm (literally) and have come out better on the other side. As giants, we are used to tackling the blows life gives us and instead of focusing on the negative, we set our sights on the positive. The 24,000 students in Goose Creek CISD count on us to be their soft place to land. No matter their background, it is our charge to educate and prepare them for life once they leave our district. We stress the importance of academics first and everything else second to all our students. Any student that participates in an extracurricular activity must first understand the importance of being successful in the classroom before they can effectively do anything else. By providing our students with the most individualized educational experience, we are ensuring that we can meet them where they are and when they face challenges in the classroom, there is help available to get them where they need to be. That can only happen with the expertise of our campus leadership and staff and the support of our parents. This school year, we added several new campuses to our fast-growing district. The Shelia C. Liles Early Learning Academy as well as the Jessie Lee Pumphrey and San Jacinto Elementary Schools opened their doors in August 2022. These campuses are the pathway to academic success for our youngest learners and include the Fueling Brains curriculum for pre-K learners. We also opened our new Robotics Center directly across from the Stuart Career Technical High School. This facility will serve as home base for our award-winning robotics team, but also as a place where students from across the district and state that are interested in the STEM field can visit. Our Lee High School Fine Arts building is well underway, Stallworth Stadium renovations are currently under construction and more facility updates are forthcoming. We dedicated district facilities in honor of two of our most beloved and decorated coaches this year. Sterling High School dedicated their football
field in honor of former head coach Al Dennis in August. Dennis was head football coach at Sterling when his 1972 team ended their season with a 13-2 record and the district championship. To date, his team holds the title of being the only Sterling High School team to reach the UIL State Championship. Former head volleyball coach Nadine Horne was a force to be reckoned with and expected the best from all her players. She was honored posthumously with a gym dedication in September to a gym packed with close family, friends, and former players. We have vertical alignment across our district. Our learners are taught the importance of prioritizing academics while reinforcing the importance of a balance of healthy activities, such as athletics. Many of our student athletes perform well in their classes, so much so, that we can expect that several of them will be receiving both academic and athletic scholarships very soon. Our Athletics department, led by Athletic Director Lee Martinez, with support from Assistant Athletic Director Gregory Smith and Dr. Demetrius McCall, Deputy Superintendent of Administrative Services and our amazing coaching staff, ensure our student athletes remain healthy and provide them with an outlet to showcase their talents. There is a lot happening in Goose Creek CISD and as your superintendent, I couldn’t be prouder of the hard work our GIANT family puts in every day. As we move swiftly through the spring term and closer to the end of the school year, I encourage you to continue to show your support for our student athletes. Our students and coaches work hard year-round, and our children deserve our support. I want to thank each of you for your continuous support of our district. We do not take for granted that you chose Goose Creek CISD, but we are so thankful that you did. We continue to strive to better, to do better and to be better than we were a year ago. Let’s continue to make that happen. Sincerely, Dr. Randal O’Brien Goose Creek CISD Superintendent

TEAM PLAYER
Hello Goose Creek GIANTS! Welcome to the spring semester of 2023! So far, we’ve had a great year centered around student success on and off the field. We are thankful for our amazing teachers, coaches, administrators and students for their dedication to the GCCISD community. Special thanks to VYPE magazine for generously showcasing our student athletes. Giving them the opportunity to be seen on a larger platform increases their GIANT impact in our community, state and beyond! We are all familiar with the benefits of being involved in extra-curricular activities while in school. For those of us who played sports, we believe that skills such as cooperation, self esteem, work-ethic and TEAMWORK were developed through times of victory and challenge as a student athlete. According to Patrick Lencioni, author of The Ideal Team Player, “In order to have a team with optimal success, it’s members must be a combination of humble, hungry and smart!”
Humility is the selfless perspective in acceptance of the goal being greater than any single person on the team. Hunger is having the determination to get things done. Smart, in this context, is the act of carefully thinking through situations and how it can impact the goals of the team. Having a combination of these characteristics is a winning formula, not only in the game of sports, but in the game of life! Throughout this year, we have seen many of our teams be successful in academic success, playoff appearances and community involvement. These successes would not be possible without the support of our educational stakeholders. Thank you for being “The Ideal Team Players” in our district. See you around the district! him focused on what matters most as he hopes to lead the Ganders on their Spring campaign. “Nearly all of my favorite memories have been from the time I’ve spent at Baytown Lee,” he said. “I could have probably gone to any other high school I wanted to, but I wanted to stay local and represent my home – the city of Baytown. Once a Gander, always a Gander.”
“If I had to choose the best aspect of my game, it would definitely be my hitting,” said White. “I started switch-hitting when I was seven. Not many people can do that, and I feel like being a smaller guy and being able to make contact against both kinds of pitchers has really accelerated my performance.” Despite his personal accomplishments, White’s loyalty to his team will keep
the remainder of my time at Lee. Now, I can just have fun and focus on the team I’m with, and not worry too much about the future.” A not-so-secret weapon that sets the future UH Cougar apart from many other players in Houston is the fact that he’s a switch hitter, which can be an incredibly useful asset to optimize one’s presence on the plate.
LEE HIGH BASEBALL RETURNED TO THE DIAMOND THIS SPRING WITH THE EXPECTATION OF EARNING THE RESPECT AS A DISTRICT 17-5A CONTENDER. Their switch-hitting Division I shortstop Zach White will see to it. “I’m going to be honest we didn’t play up to our standards last season,” said White. “I’m confident that this will be our year. We have a lot of upperclassmen who are going to bring the experience the team needs to take us to the next level.” As is the case with several athletes, White’s baseball journey began at a young age. “I started playing the game when I was about five years old,” he said. “I grew up watching my older brother play, and I think that’s what really got me into it. If it weren’t for him, I don’t think I would be playing at all. Just watching the competitive atmosphere and how much fun it is, really inspired me and has driven my passion for it to this day.” Where has that passion led him? Well, just the opportunity to play Division I baseball for the University of Houston after graduating in 2024. “Obviously, I thank God for the blessing to continue my career,” White said. “It was definitely a surreal moment for my family and I, to just know that I’m good enough to play at a college level, let alone a Big 12 school. It took a lot of pressure off of me for

when needed. Defense is also a strong suit for me because I tend to have a lot of range in the middle-infield.” So, what are Desselle’s plans for the future? “Five years from now, I hope to see myself graduating from LSU as a D1 player,” she said. “That would be a dream come true for me. Further down the line, maybe in 10 years, I want to be a child’s eye specialist or a journalist. I know those are two very different choices but I’m still not entirely sure what career path I’m going to take.” Going through high school can be a challenge for many, but what if one could give themselves advice with the experience they’ve gained over the years? “If I could tell my younger self anything going into my freshman year, I’d say ‘just be yourself’,” said Desselle. “Furthermore, I’d want to encourage myself to spend more time around the people who you’d want to be like in the future. Don’t be around those who aren’t making you a better person.” It would appear that Desselle has found herself in the right crowd with GCM softball. She will aspire to be her best “self” as she and the Lady Patriots take on their new Spring season with steadfast optimism for the future.
GOOSE CREEK MEMORIAL SOFTBALL RETURNS TO THE DIAMOND THIS SPRING WITH THE INTENTION OF RECLAIMING ITS STATUS AS A CONTENDER IN A CHALLENGING DISTRICT THAT FEATURES THE LIKES OF PERENNIAL POWERHOUSES BARBERS HILL, PORT NECHES GROVES AND CROSBY. Head coach Rachel Smith-Duty will look to her key playmakers to provide a leading presence in the dugout in 2023. Enter Madison Desselle. The junior shortstop has burst onto the scene for the Lady Patriots, becoming one of their most well-rounded and dependable players on the field. Desselle has been honing her skills for quite some time. “My softball journey began when my mom had a dream that she wanted all of us [Desselle and her sisters] to play,” said Desselle. “She had played growing up and kind of wanted to pass that down to us. At first, I was hesitant to start playing, but when I finally did, I ended up making two all-star teams and that’s when it all started.” Desselle is what is known in softball terms as a “slapper”, which is a left handed hitter that can be utilized as one of the team’s greatest weapons due to the pressure they can impose on an opposing defense. “I can definitely be categorized as a ‘slapper’,” Desselle said. “So, I can pretty much do just about anything at the plate. When the occasion calls for it, I can power-hit or put down a bunt

THE RENAISSANCE MAN GCM ACE SAMMY IBARRA JR. CAN DO IT ALL
\\ Matthew Ogle
BASEBALL HAS BEEN IN THE CARDS FOR GOOSE CREEK MEMORIAL’S STAR SENIOR PITCHER SAMMY IBARRA JR. CONSIDERING HE WAS BORN INTO THE CULTURE, HE WOULDN’T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY. “I started when I was six years old because of my grandfather,” said Ibarra. “He’s always played since he was a young man, which kind of served as a motivation for me. I always liked the sport after watching him play.” Since then, the sport has suited Ibarra well, ultimately leading to him being the ace for the GCM baseball and signing a college scholarship with Ranger College. “I’ve always had a pretty decent arm,” he said. “But, I think it was around my eighth-grade year when I thought that I had the potential to build a future around the sport. I’ve just kept pushing from that point.” Ibarra has a knack for being versatile on the mound, throwing a fastball that ranges in the low 90s, with the capability of mixing in his off-speed slider. His impressive stats (6-4, 2.33 ERA, 81 K, 6 CG) earned Ibarra a first-team, all district selection in 2022. It wouldn’t come as a surprise if he repeats those kinds of numbers this Spring, as he hopes to guide the Patriots to the postseason. “I just want to be a leader to the team, first of all, and be a good example,” Ibarra said. “Of course, making the playoffs is our initial plan. Individually, if I can beat my team record for most single

into cars and rebuilding stuff, getting into motors, etc. I’d like to be somewhere in that industry. Hopefully, as a master mechanic one day.” Further establishing himself as a jack of all trades, the senior Patriot is also a talented musician. “I actually play the accordion,” Ibarra laughed. “My dad was the one who

CLAY MIXON IS A BASEBALL LIFER. His parents got him into the sport as a youth and he has stayed between the lines ever since. “It’s always been baseball,” the senior said. “My strength is just being versatile. Whatever is asked from me, I’m going to do it to the best of my ability.” When not on the field, he stays in the weight room. “Just being committed to fitness has been a big part of my success,” the Sterling senior said. “If I’m not on the diamond, I’m in the gym.” If he’s not in either of those places, you can find Mixon in a meeting leading his peers as the Student Body President at Sterling High School. “One of my teachers told me I should run for the position,” he laughed. “She actually signed me up for it and before I knew it, I was the president. It’s really pretty fun. We are in a lot of meetings creating ways to improve school spirit, setting up fun student events and just trying to make the school better.” After he hangs up his blue and white jersey and his presidency, Mixon is off to Blinn Community College, where he will be playing college baseball. “It’s been a dream of mine since I started playing,” he said. “I really like the coaches there and will fight for any opportunity to get on the field.”

The hardwood was good to Goose Creek Memorial, as the Patriots continued to build their program under the direction of Jamal Haymon. The Pats finished third in a competitive District 17-5A and beat Texas City in the first round of the postseason. Defense was the team’s calling card and Diamon Maloney earned the Defensive MVP for the district. Sterling had a solid season, going 16-19 overall and 6-8 in district.
