Gilbert, Arizona

In 1935, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) was created by presidential order to give employment, build needed highways, bridges, and buildings, and pro vide other services to help bring America out of the Great Depression. In 1938, the Gilbert Town Hall was approved as one of the association’s projects, and the WPA constructed the building, which is shown below. This is the site of the current Chamber of Commerce.

After the Timmons/Blakely Garage was torn down, the Tones built this super grocery store for the Pay-n-Take-It chain. The store was built in 1929, and the bank failure caused the demise of this new business, too. Joe’s Bar-B-Que is here now.
