I really fell into a bowl of cream when my human family, the O’Hares, adopted me. They know just what pet rabbits like! They feed me hay and lettuce and carrots. Luckily for their budget, almost any vegetable scraps will do for my meals. You might say rabbits are more environmentally friendly than pet cats and dogs since we’re vegans. This works great with the O’Hares, who are very ecologically minded. They’ve taught me to use a litter box and even use my waste in the compost pile. But I realize not everyone is into that level of “recycling.” I’ve got my own cage in the corner of the living room with a blanket I can burrow under and a box I can hide in. This little den of my own is also helpful for the family because it keeps me from chewing on things when they aren’t home. Yes—honesty is the best policy—there is one downside to having a pet rabbit: we need lots of things to chew on to keep our teeth filed naturally. Understanding and meeting these unique needs is crucial for our well-being. When I am free to roam in the house, I love to nose bump the ankles of my humans. They squeal with delight as they bend down and pick me up to pet my amazingly soft, silky fur. “Oh, she’s so cute,” they’ll gush. Cute must mean something good, considering that I’ve lived with the O’Hares and their two dogs for five years. Bunnies are not just for Easter anymore. We’re in it for the long haul, which for us is 8 to 12 years, just like the average cat or dog. This means that if you choose to adopt a rabbit, you’re embarking on a long-term, meaningful relationship. If I haven’t convinced you to have another member of the animal kingdom in addition to a cat or dog, hop on over to your local rescue group to see if they have a rabbit fostering program. That way you’ll get a feel for disposition and temperament before you adopt. Yours in peaceful coexistence, Rosie the Rabbit
