EMPLOYMENT AND OCCUPATION Houston has been a world center for energy exploration, production and technology, as well as a center for chemical process technology, space exploration and associated development . While the COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on these and other industries, the Greater Houston Partnership sees an improving economy and an expansion of jobs for the area tech workforce in its online report , “Economy at a Glance – March 2022.” It states that the region had a record year of job growth in 2021, with strong population growth and corporate relocations/expansions. Historically, the top employment in the area is categorized by the Census as: 1) education, healthcare, social assistance; 2) professional, scientific, management , administrative; 3) retail trade; 4) manufacturing; and 5) arts, entertainment , recreation, food service. The top 10 employers in the area now include the Amazon fulfillment center that opened in 2020. It ranks in fifth place with 3,300 employees, according to data from the Katy Economic Development Council. With the area’s ability to attract national firms, the Chamber of Commerce’s education and workforce committee is at the forefront of helping these companies meet their workforce needs.

Households with children under the age of 18 as a percentage of all households range from approximately 17-23 percent . See Table 3. EDUCATION AND INCOME The distribution of educational attainment of the region’s population, broken down into two groups aged 18-24 and 25 years and older, is shown in Table 4. Roughly 60 percent of the Fulshear-Katy population have some formal post-secondary school education, with 29 percent of the total population finishing with a bachelor ’s degree in some field of study, and 20 percent with a graduate or professional degree. The neighborhoods located south of I-10 show the highest percentages of college and advanced degrees. Median household income from the ACS is shown in Table 5.
