Greetings

We are excited to launch the spring 2024 athletic season here in Fort Bend ISD! The spring semester means a new season of athletic events across the region and I am excited to see our student-athletes continue to make me and our entire Fort Bend ISD family proud. I am impressed and grateful for your continued support shown to our students and programs. FBISD boasts award winning athletics and a long record of distinction in several sports. Whether in baseball, soccer or golf, our student-athletes shine in their efforts, and many do so while maintaining high academic standings. They are great example of the

types of students we have here in the district. These students are supported by dedicated coaches, district athletics staff and educators who believe in their abilities and foster their natural talent. I appreciate their unified efforts in helping our students succeed as they shape these young people into leaders. Their futures will be brighter because of their time in our athletics programs. I look forward to seeing you as we cheer on our students! Sincerely, Dr. Marc Smith FBISD Superintendent of Schools

Always in Pursuit

Welcome to another great edition of the Fort Bend ISD VYPE magazine. Through our partnership with VYPE, Fort Bend ISD will be spotlighting sports programs and our student athletes from across our great district. Fort Bend ISD coaches, staff, and student athletes plan, practice, and play to win, but our purpose goes beyond this formula. Our commitment to the student athletes of Fort Bend ISD is about so much more than putting points on the scoreboard or winning competitions. Being part of the athletic programs in our district also means that we are developing character, honor, and strong individuals all while instilling the importance of community and servitude. It is our pursuit to help our student athletes be their best; to be one’s best as a teammate, in the classroom, and in the community. Our purpose is to transform lives through

participation in sports. Our coaches equip student athletes with the knowledge and skills to perform their sport, and in addition, provide character and leadership skill evelopment that will carry them far beyond the game. The Athletic Department is proud to showcase our amazing athletic programs and student athletes of Fort Bend ISD. In the following pages, you will see a range of articles about the fantastic work of student athletes. These stories represent a small part of a larger experience of what it means to be a Fort Bend ISD Profile of a Graduate, team member, leader, and student athlete. I am proud to share with you the accomplishments highlighted within these pages. Always in Pursuit… Dena Scott Fort Bend ISD Athletic Director

AUSTIN BULLDOGS What a season it was for the Lady Bulldog basketball team, which won district and had a 31-2 regular season record. Move-in Shun’teria Anumele was a huge addition and was complimented by Andrea Sturdivant and Crystal Schultz. The swim teams showed well at the district meet and several athletes moved on to the Regionals, while the boys’ soccer team is a lock for a playoff spot. The softball team hopes to sneak into the postseason after finishing fifth in district a year ago, while baseball hopes to better on their second place district finish from 2023. Golf could be sneaky good this Spring. Stay tuned.

BUSH BRONCOS The boys and girls basketball teams had some highs this season but each just missed the playoffs. Mason Guidry led a senior-heavy boys team, while Idia Orobor and Sincere Cobbin provided senior leadership for the girls. The Bush swimming program continues to build, while the Broncos’ soccer teams were competitive in district play. Baseball and softball have some pieces in Kayden Petry and Jose Fiscal and Natalia Mojica and Kiersten Kyle, respectively. CLEMENTS RANGERS Clements’ basketball had a historic season going 30-0 and 16-0 in district play under the direction of Van Price. Divine Ugochukwu was the straw who stirred the drink, while Aziz Olajuwon and Joshua Clark pitched in double figures. The girls soccer team had a breakout season led by Chloe Lee and Faith Fong and reached the postseason. The swim team was the District 20-6A champion, while Kayla Fu reached the State Meet in the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard butterfly. Theodore Ho reached State in the long-distance freestyle along with Austin Pan. Clements baseball and softball are looking to sneak into a fourth playoff spot, while the golf team is one of the best in Houston led by Bao Tran and Katelyn Lam.

THE LIGHTNING B O L T S CRAWFORD CHARGERS The Chargers are the new kids on the block in Fort Bend ISD. In basketball, Alvin Mosley looks like a prospect as he led the junior varsity team this Winter. The girls have future stars in Kassidy Mouton, Katelyn Rodriguez and Addison George just to name a few. Renata Bautista and Danyella Atrian are offensive threats for the girls soccer team, while Avaro Rios and Humberto Juan lead the boys on the pitch. In the Spring, the baseball team will be led by Crue Lagrandeur and Shane Rourick as they get their legs under them. The softball team will look to Kylie Remington at the plate and Adrianna Pomales-Ng on the mound to get this program into the conversation. Jackson Taylor, Jade Cornelious and Jacob Jolivet will shoot for birdies in golf, while Donovan Williams and Jade Beale will anchor their respective track and field teams.

ELKINS KNIGHTS The Elkins Knights boys basketball team heated up this Winter, finishing second in district with an overall record of 23-9. Seniors Charley Reado, Matthew Nyakundi and Justin Mitchell made for a balanced offense and a stingy defense. Paris Anderson led the ladies on the hardwood but fell short of the postseason. Jada Moye and Madison Inniss will ignite the offense on the pitch for the girls, while Fole Adeniyi will hope to put the ball in the net enough to net a playoff spot. Braylon Payne (Houston-commit) is one of the best baseball players in the country and will be drafted, but he’s going to need some help on the diamond to pick up some wins. The softball team is young and talented led by sophomore Kourtney Jones and junior Victoria Vargas. Look out for Sydney Freeman and Taylor Jackson on the oval for the girls track and field team, who are some of the state’s top returners in 2024.

HIGHTOWER HURRICANES The Hurricanes traversed the Winter season with style, as each program made their claim as contenders. For Canes girls hoops, newcomer Ogechi Okeke lit up the scoreboard in her freshmen debut, while veterans Madison Bob and Jaya Johnson propelled the group to a co-district title. The guys’ side narrowly missed out on the postseason, however, senior Milton Rice showcased consistent flashes of greatness. On the pitch, senior striker Alex Agwunobi has been a goal-scoring machine and is making a case for District MVP, while brother Andres Agwunobi and Angel Duarte anchor a strong Hightower back-line. In the Spring season, the baseball team is coming off a playoff appearance in 2023 and are bringing back main-stays Angel Gutierrez, Roberto Delao and Mason Sly. On the softball field, Adriuana Coleman and Baylee Bonner will look to bring the club back into the playoff conversation. Meanwhile, several Hurricanes track standouts – namely Jaquail Morris, Tori Campbell, Kade Phillips, Veronica Aubrey, and Ephraim Dotson – anticipate strong performances after their success in the district a year ago. Hightower golf is young, but upperclassmen Andre Santos, Javen Nunley, and Jenna Gregorio will provide the experience on the links.

KEMPNER COUGARS The Cougs showed up in the Winter, beginning with yet another strong outing on the court. The boys reached the playoffs for the second straight year, courtesy of Jacob Broussard, who surpassed the 1,000 point mark to lead the offense, alongside seniors Cayden Gibson and Chinedu Achuama. Senior Heaven Ferguson was a bright spot on the girls’ side, who narrowly missed out on the postseason. Both Kempner soccer programs remain competitive in the district. Josue Lopez and David Velazquez are among the stars on the boys’ side, while Cera Moreno, Gabriella Reumont, and Maddy Horne anchor the girls on the pitch. Meanwhile, Vy Ngo and Tammie Ma captained the swim team in 2023. As Kempner heads to the track, coaches look to Kenna Negassa, Elizabeth Ojo, Ellis Sanusi and Elizabeth Werts to rack up the points among the tough district competition. The softball program looks to rally after being one spot removed from the playoff race a year ago. Seniors Kori Vasquez, Adaline Wood and Emma Kuehn should provide the firepower to do so. Thomas Moss and Brian Luna will headline the Cougs on the other side of the diamond, as they look to re-enter the district conversation. Additionally, seniors Nahl Vagher, Ashley Pham, and Mabel Huang look to cap off their high school career with some medals on the golf course.

MARSHALL BUFFALOES Basketball was king for Marshall in the Winter season. Coach Ronnie Courtney’s squad extended their undefeated district win-streak to 44 en route to their third-consecutive district championship. The girls’ team was relatively young and were just outside of the playoff picture in 2023. However, another year of experience for Kennedi Taylor and Shabrion Parks should promise a rise in contention. The reigning Class 5A State Champs – Marshall Boys Track & Field – are back and ready for a repeat. Under the direction of coach Lloyd Banks, the Buffs relay teams should be just as dominant as last year, while the girls’ side intends to run it back after finishing second overall at the State meet. On the diamond, both the baseball and softball teams look to flip the script after working some kinks out a year ago. Look to seniors Nakira Rolling, Devin Pree, Aniyah Williams and Mark Marshall to be among the veterans who can lead their respective young lineups. Similarly, Avion Duncan and Sofia Mora Cruz will be the upperclassmen leaders on the Marshall golf team.

RIDGE POINT PANTHERS RPHS was a force to be reckoned with on the hardwood, as both the boys (23-10) and girls (17-14) basketball teams competed well enough in the district to earn a playoff berth. Dorian Hayes and Jaylen Singleton were the bread-winners for coach Darren Johnson’s squad, while Sydney Thomas and Kennedi Turner were among the key pieces for the girls. The Lady Panthers return to the pitch with more determination than ever, after finishing 2023 as the Class 6A State runner-ups. Coach Evelyn Torres brings back several players from that roster – namely Dayo Tennyson, Camryn LeTellier, and Emma Lovell – which should promise another deep run in the playoffs. The same could be said for the boys, who look to dominate the district yet again, with captain Blake Pipkin leading the way. Ridge Point Baseball should once again dominate in FBISD, after coming off two consecutive undefeated district championships. Texas-commit Jack McKernan will be coach Mike Dutka’s ace, with Will Baker, and Jake Stratton bolstering the lineup. On the softball diamond, junior Braelyn Daniels (LSU-commit) will look to anchor the Panthers crew after reaching the Class 6A Regional Semis a year ago. As we head to the track, watch for Mason Dossett, Sienna Brown, Ashton Bethel-Roman, Rayne Foley, Hartford McCall, and Caitlin Cullison to be just some of the standouts the Panthers feature as they aim for a return to the State meet.

TRAVIS TIGERS The Tigers were a force on the court this Winter, as both the boys and girls teams claimed the third place spot in the district prior to their respective playoff runs. Coach Craig Brownson’s group was led by senior guard Justin Mack, Timi Ibikunle, and Nekabari Mii, while coach Robin Little’s squad featured stars Jordyn Mays, Mackenzie Teuton, and Anisa Allen. Meanwhile a senior-laden Travis girls soccer team continues to compete well within a tough district slate, with the likes of Alana Guzman, Hailey Garcia, and Halle Grover leading the charge. In the pool, Wilks Smith, Laura Lopez, Christian Aguilar, and Audrey Waters are among the seniors who capped off their high school career with style. Now that teams are heading back to the field, fans will need to keep an eye on Travis Softball after they finished last season as co-district champs prior to a postseason appearance. Addi Flores, Makayla Dunn, and Lauryn Garza each return for coach Katie Welch’s lineup, as they look to repeat that effort. First-teamer Devin Cummings returns to the mound for the baseball team, along with Rhett Koudelka and Jacob Bowser, in the pursuit of returning back to their playoff form. On the track, Bryce Jones, Danielle Bejar, Josiah Vilmael, and Jessica Ogunlade will be the leading figures for coaches Ron Johnson and Mike Green’s respective crews. Additionally, look for Audrey Jones, Douglas Carney, Brooke Kocher, and Hayden Cole to propel the Tigers Golf program forward this Spring.

WILLOWRIDGE EAGLES Coach Tiffany Collins’ girls basketball team was the cream of the crop for Willowridge in their Winter campaign. After finishing 27-8 and taking the No. 2 spot (11-3) in the crowded FBISD, Natalie Greene, Au’Rayona Seals, and Hailey Kinchen would guide the Eagles to an impressive run in the postseason. While they had their fair share of ups and downs, Kaden Davis and Angelo Mack remained bright spots throughout the regular season for WHS boys hoops. Similarly, both soccer programs are working out some kinks with their young squads. However, upperclassmen James Gonzalez, Wendy Martinez, Douglas Moreno, and Arly Santamaria will be depended on to fine tune their respective rosters moving forward. In the Spring season, Anthony Momon returns to the track after placing in the Top 10 (200m) at last year’s Class 5A State meet. Coaches Christian Hartfield and Courtnie Ratliff will also look to Illona Gabaut-Diziere, Ashton Jones, and Queyon Brown to rack up points for the Eagles. Willowridge Baseball returns to the diamond following a somewhat down-year in 2023, but Nathan Bravo and Dustin Goff should be the key figures to turn things around. The softball team had similar troubles a year ago, so coach Derrick Earthly will count on seniors Kyla Walker, Asia Stewart, and Briana Hernandez to anchor this year’s relatively young squad.
