DID YOU KNOW? DID YOU KNOW... that the first woman to found a bank was African-American civil rights leader Maggie Walker? In 1903, Walker chartered the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank in Richmond, Va., and served as the bank’s president and later chairman to the Board of Directors until her death in 1934. She was a leading advocate for women and African Americans in the segregated south. Walker founded the bank to encourage women to save their money. By 1924, St. Luke boasted more than 50,000 members, and by 1930, it remained one of few banks to survive

the Stock Market Crash of 1929. St. Luke Penny Savings Bank eventually merged with two other banks to become The Consolidated Bank and Trust Company, which is still operating today in Richmond under the new name Peoples Bank.
