DID YOU KNOW?
DID YOU KNOW THAT the same company has been providing the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing with paper for U.S. currency since 1879? The story goes back even further than that, in connection with the legendary patriot Paul Revere. In 1775, Revere saddled his horse by a paper mill that had been acquired by papermaker

and fellow freedom fighter Stephen Crane. During the Revolutionary War, Revere used his skill as an engraver to produce printing plates that served as the first “U.S.” securities, to assure colonists they would be paid for their service. Stephen Crane provided the paper on which Revere printed these early U.S. banknotes. In 1801, Stephen's son Zenus Crane started his own paper mill catering to banks, printers, and shopkeepers. The Cranes later devised a method for embedding silk thread in the paper to mark each note's denomination. And in 1879, 26-year-old W. Murray Crane secured an order to manufacture U.S. banknote paper. Today, global company Crane Currency is still the sole supplier of the special linen-and-cotton paper blend that gives our money its distinct feel.
