DID YOU KNOW? DID YOU KNOW... that the “piggy bank” gets its name from a type of clay called “pygg”? In the Middle Ages, people stored spare coins in dishes and kitchen jars made of orange clay called pygg, which was more economical than metal. Back then, pygg would have likely been pronounced “pug”; this pronunciation changed over time, so that when English potters in the 19th century received requests for pygg banks, they made banks shaped like pigs. Even today, the pig is still a symbol of luck and wealth.
