DID YOU KNOW... that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) collects nearly $1 million in loose change at U.S. airports every year? It’s common for travelers to leave money behind when they empty their pockets during security screenings, and that loose change adds up. In fiscal year 2019, ahead of the pandemic, TSA officials collected $926,030.44. The TSA states that $98,110 was left behind by passengers at John F. Kennedy International in New York City, the

highest amount collected at any U.S. airport. San Francisco International came in second with $52,669 while Miami International was third with $47,694. Under United States Code, Section 44945 of title 49, the TSA is granted budget authority to spend the unclaimed money, which is deposited into a special account where it can be tracked.
