DID YOU KNOW? DID YOU KNOW... that our nation’s capital is Washington, D.C., due to a deal struck by American founding fathers Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson? After the Revolutionary War, the nation had substantial debt. Hamilton, as Secretary of the Treasury, believed that the federal government should assume the states’ war debts. He faced strong opposition from the southern states, which carried less war debt, and particularly from Jefferson, who served as Secretary of State. At a dinner party that has come to be known as “the compromise of 1790,” Jefferson agreed

to drop his opposition in exchange for Hamilton’s backing in relocating the capital city. Virginians like Jefferson and President George Washington wanted to build a new national capital along the Potomac River, while others preferred to keep the capital in New York City or return it to Philadelphia. Thanks to this compromise, Hamilton secured both Jefferson’s and James Madison’s support, and the southern Representatives succeeded in relocating the nation’s capital to the newly created District of Columbia.
