The National Bank Act of 1933 prohibited banks from offering interest on checking accounts, so banks needed to get

creative when it came to attracting new customers. Banks incentivized customers with prizes such as toasters or wall clocks. Today, we are familiar with rewards checking accounts, which offer perks such as airline miles, cash or reward points.
