DID YOU KNOW? DID YOU KNOW... that the eagle on our American currency was modeled after the unofficial avian mascot of the Philadelphia Mint? In the 1830s, a bald eagle made its way inside the Philadelphia Mint and befriended the employees, who named him Peter. After his untimely death, Peter the “Mint Eagle” was mounted by a taxidermist and is still on display at the Philadelphia Mint today. Peter has since been used as a model for coin engravers.
