DID YOU KNOW?
DID YOU KNOW... that the word “dollar” is derived from the German term for a large silver coin, a “taler”? In the small Czech Republic town of Jachymov, the Count of Schlick opened a mine and began to mint and issue silver coins. These coins
were called “Schlicken thalers” or “Joachim’s thalers,” later shortened to “taler” and then “daler.” Many of the colloquial terms or slang we use for our currency have interesting backstories. We use the slang term “bucks” because this is what people called the deerskins they used to barter for goods and services. Similarly, we use the phrase “shell out” meaning “to pay,” because early European colonists observed Native Americans using shells as currency. The term “salary” comes from the Latin word for salt, “salarium,” because Roman soldiers were paid their wages in salt. Need we go on?
