The founders of Bank of Bird-in-Hand saw a glaring need in Lancaster County, Pa., in the heart of Amish Country; the Amish, unique for its culture that limits the use of modern technology and transportation, needed a bank that could accommodate their way of life. The bank’s four Gelt buses (”gelt” is a German term for “money”) are recreational vehicles equipped as mobile

branches, carrying ATMs and staff to 18 locations across Lancaster and neighboring counties. The bank serves the Amish community with a focus on routine deposit gathering and loans to farmers and small business owners. Bank of Bird-in-Hand launched in 2013 with $17 million in capital; today, the bank has more than $1 billion in assets. Though not strictly an Amish bank, President and CEO Lori Maley estimates that about half of the bank’s customers are Amish.
