The Reeds began prospecting the area for more gold and found a 28-pound nugget in 1803; by 1824, the mine had yielded over $100,000. The Reed Gold Mine is recognized as the site of the first documented discovery of gold in the United States. Today, the Reed Gold Mine is a National Historic Landmark, managed by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. Visitors can take guided tours of restored underground tunnels and learn how to pan for gold.
