DID YOU KNOW THAT the United States Secret Service was originally created in 1865 to stamp out rampant counterfeiting? By the end of the Civil War, the country’s financial stability was in jeopardy because nearly one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit. The Secret Service was established as a bureau in the Treasury Department to suppress counterfeiting.

Only two years later, in 1867, its responsibilities broadened to include “detecting persons perpetrating frauds against the government.” In 1894, the Secret Service began informal part-time protection of President Cleveland. As a result of the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901, Congress requested Secret Service protection of U.S. presidents. Today, the U.S. Secret Service is a law enforcement organization of nearly 70,000 employees worldwide fighting crime on a global scale.
