The flexitarian movement is inspiring a fresh look at plant based protein items.
IT’S BECOME IMPOSSIBLE TO IGNORE the momentum of the plant based protein movement. Datassential reports that in the past four years alone, plant-based protein menu items have grown 1,828 percent. Maybe that’s not surprising to some, as it seems everywhere one looks, a new plant-based LTO or menu fixture is being promoted by a major player in the restaurant world. And it’s true: Datassential reports that 12.7 percent of the menus at national restaurant chains now have a plant-based protein item. The increase of plant-based protein menu items is being driven by the growing number of younger diners who identify as flexitarians. Plant Based News reports that over half of Gen Z and millennials identify as such, while independent operator surveys run by the CRC found that 79 percent of Gen Z and millennials say that they order plant-based protein items on a regular basis.
