Explore Chattanooga Summer 2026
F or nearly 90 years, painted barns across America’s highways carried bold invitations to travelers. Messages like “Beautiful Beyond Belief,” “The Eighth Wonder of the World,” and the unforgettable promise, “When You See Rock City, You See the Best,” turned rural landscapes into cultural landmarks, encouraging generations of motorists to “SEE ROCK CITY” as they set out on the great American road trip. To celebrate America 250, Rock City is leaning into that legacy and reflecting on its place in the American story through community, creativity, and collaboration. Inside the Gardens, more than 500 hand-painted barn birdhouses are on display in the Hearth Pavilion, each created by local students. No two are alike, and the imagination behind each piece is on full display. Throughout the property, guests will discover fresh interpretations of the barn and birdhouse icon, from walk-in photo experiences to the newly installed Tom Thumb’s Big Little Farm, featuring seasonal vegetables, a playful hayloft, and the interactive Timber Roll experience. A specially commissioned work by Alabama folk artist Butch Anthony adds another layer to the exhibit. Best known as the creator of the Museum of Wonder in Seale, AL, his work blends and mixes distinct cultural elements from a self-taught perspective and ads a truly unique work of contemporary folk art to the Gardens. The creativity doesn’t stop there: Live fiddle and banjo music fill the Gardens during Strings of the Mountain, with daily performances at scenic spots like Lover’s Leap and Cliff Terrace by Matt Downer and Owen Saunders. Guests can also follow Fable, Rock City’s storyteller gnome, on an American field trip through native gardens and the Enchanted Trails while looking for clues about historic barns, state flags, soaring eagles, and the many stories that, like America, make Rock City special. The season continues with Dog Days of Summer, where four-legged companions are part of the experience, along with military appreciation days on Memorial Day and the Fourth of July honoring those who have served. Classic summer treats get a patriotic twist, from red, white, and blue kettle corn to seasonal desserts and drinks that match the moment. Beyond the Gardens, large-scale barn and birdhouse sculptures appear throughout Chattanooga and Walker County, inviting visitors to take a local road trip and experience these modern tributes along the way. It all comes together as a summer experience rooted in something familiar, yet newly imagined. The same message that once guided travelers down open highways now lives on in new and unexpected ways.
