CHATTANOOGA STREET ART SERIES MURALS Chattanooga is known as the Scenic City, alluding to its views of surrounding mountains, valleys, and rivers, but its nickname is also supported by the dynamic art scene that boasts a wide variety of beautiful street murals that can be seen and appreciated around nearly every corner as well.
These murals add color, personality, and vibrancy to this already lively city. Below are a couple that stand out as perfect spots to swing by (and snap a photo in front of) during the summer months due to their bright and colorful designs.
Change Starts In Your Own Backyard Artist: Steffi Lynn Location: Broad and Aquarium Way
This bright, expansive mural aims to celebrate the outdoors and environmental conservation. It is the product of a collaboration between Volkswagen and The Conservation Fund, represented on the mural itself, and was officially unveiled in 2021 on Earth Day. The phrase “Change Starts in Your Own Backyard” is set against a colorful, nature-inspired design featuring four native flowers to the Cherokee National Forest which artist Steffi Lynn drew inspiration from. It is the perfect mural to visit during the summer months in particular as it complements the abounding color of the surrounding blooms. Set against an exterior brick wall on Broad and Aquar ium Street, Change Starts in Your Own Backyard truly stands out and draws the viewer in through its dynamic, energetic impression. In a city with so much beautiful nature to enjoy, this mural’s message is right at home.
Spirit of Main Street Artist: Shaun LaRose Location: 1501 Long Street Spirit of Main Street depicts the history and essence of Main Street, an area of Downtown Chat tanooga that has grown and evolved significantly over the years, but has maintained the vibrancy and energy that locals and visitors love about it. The mural, which debuted in 2007, is a collaboration between muralist Shaun LaRose, storyteller Jim Pfitzer, and graphic designer Andrew Stewart. Its composition layers surrounding architecture, local stories, and Main Street’s chronology in a vi sually dynamic way.. Located on 1501 Long Street, it’s the perfect pit stop after grabbing some coffee at Mean Mug or a breakfast bagel at Eggman Bagelry next door.
