A s the team here at Explore Chattanooga was putting together this summer issue, I had a re-awakening that we really do live in a great city! Folks around the U.S. are beginning to recognize it, too. Several national publications (U.S. News & World Report, Forbes , and Money Magazine ) have recently held reader polls and Chattanooga is consistently rated as a top city to live in or visit, and we have even received the award for “Best Town Ever” two years in a row by Outside Magazine . Of course, we are blessed with natural beauty and wonderful opportunities for outdoor recreation. From bike riding, hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, and rafting to just walking along the Riverwalk or downtown. For the adventurous there is hang gliding, paragliding, and skydiving as well. We also have a vibrant art scene supported well by the community. There is the Hunter Museum of American Art, the River Gallery and the Houston Museum of Glass and Decorative Arts in the Bluff View Art District, several working art studios, a variety of smaller galleries exhibiting some exceptionally talented local and regional artists. The foodie landscape is undergoing a bit of a renaissance, creating a fresh, inventive culinary scene driven by our great local chefs. No matter what type of food or drink you are craving, you are guaranteed to find it here. Our diverse restaurants range from barbecue to Thai and Vietnamese to Chicago style hoagies, Korean steak to Chinese fusion. There are also some wonderful neighborhood bars where the locals are always friendly and inviting. The world-class attractions here are loved and well supported by locals, and not just when the family is in town. All of them are continually improving, adding events, new features and keeping things fresh. As you get out and EXPLORE Chattanooga, we hope you will experience all that makes our city a wonderful place to live. We are delighted to share it with you.

Be sure and grab the FREE Explore Chattanooga Coupon Map and get some great savings at area shops, restaurants, and attractions. Found at local hotels, welcome centers and select shops and attractions.

Viewers will follow these gorgeous pollinators on a multi-generational, 2,500-mile migration from the mountains of central Mexico to the United States. Along the way, they’ll learn about the important ecological role Monarchs play. Flight of the Butterflies 3D will be showing Monday, June 17 – Thursday, June 20 @ 12:00 PM | 3:45 PM & Friday, June 21 – Sunday, June 23 @ 12:00 PM Also showing this summer, guests can dip below the waves to learn more about the largest animal ever to have lived in Blue Whales: Return of the Giants 3D. The theater’s 89-foot-wide screen is ALMOST large enough to show the film’s namesake titans at true-to-life scale. Blue Whales: Return of the Giants 3D

V isitors to the Tennessee Aquarium – recently voted the country’s Best Aquarium in Newsweek Magazine’s readers’ choice poll – will find plenty of activities for creating fond family memories on Chattanooga’s riverfront this summer. Nearby, colorful shiners and dace, swift-swimming Brook Trout, and wide-mouthed Paddlefish are waiting to thrill intrepid adventurers with a keen interest in native wildlife found in the freshwater streams and rivers flowing just outside. Guests might even catch some recently observed spawning behavior by native fishes in the newest Ridges to Rivers gallery. Yet viewing this incredible wildlife – more than 12,000 animals in total – is just a fraction of the fun to be found during a visit to the Aquarium this year. Peppered throughout the galleries, guests will discover larger-than-life photographs by award-winning National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore. Sartore is on a quest to document every animal species living

in human care at zoos and aquariums worldwide for his Photo Ark project. This 17-year effort to inspire viewers to take action to safeguard endangered species features animals photographed against plain black or white backgrounds using studio lighting. Sartore hopes to build a connection between the viewer and level the playing field to show that all animals are important, from the smallest fish to the largest elephant. As visitors venture across the Aquarium Plaza between the River Journey and Ocean Journey buildings, they can explore the Pollinator Pathway at the peak of pollinator season. The self guided experience winds through gardens filled with pollinator friendly native plants. It features permanent signage describing pollinator behaviors and demonstrating ways to help make your home and garden more pollinator-friendly. June 17-23, the Aquarium will celebrate Pollinator Week on the plaza with fun games and daily giveaways of plugs and seed packets for pollinator friendly plant species. These free activities are weather-permitting. Advance tickets may be purchased online at www.tnaqua.org.

Jun 6 NATIONAL DAY OF CAVES & KARST / RUBY FALLS Ruby Falls is celebrating the National Day of Caves and Karst on June 6. This special day raises awareness of the crucial roles both caves and karsts play in our lives and environment. Tennessee has over 10,000 known caves – more than any other state. Caves and karst are rich in natural resources, including the most productive groundwater on earth with 175 different minerals; some of which are found only in caves. www.rubyfalls.com/ events/national-day-of-caves-and-karst Jun 14 - Dec 9 LUMEN MARTIN WINTER: LEGACY OF DEVOTION Lumen Martin Winter (1908–1982) was a celebrated midwestern American artist with a unique range of talents. His lifelong dedication to creating art resulted in a prolific body of work that included sculpture, painting, drawing, mosaic art, and murals. Though best remembered for public art, Winter painted and drew on a smaller scale daily. Winter’s son William remembers his father’s passion for art, “He had a compulsion to create. If he had time, he would find some materials to use and something to draw.” His legacy is a lifetime of creativity and a commitment to artmaking that continued until his final days. Thanks to local collectors Patty and Larry Puckett, Winter’s drawings and paintings will be on view at the Hunter Museum, providing an intimate look into the artist’s studio and process. huntermuseum.org Jun 15 Join the fun at the Chattanooga Zoo’s 8th annual Ice Cream Safari!
